FAIRVIEW – Facing a brisk wind of 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts up to 40, eight teams were involved in some very competitive golf Monday during the AHSAA Class 5A, Section 3 Tournament at Chesley Oaks Course.

Golf Professional Cary Craig described the day as one of the worst for wind for high school participants, with the stakes very high: a berth to the sub-state round next week in Scottsboro.

Etowah High School handled the conditions well; the four Blue Devils scored in the 70s and won the tournament with an 18-hole round of 303.

Hayden challenged Etowah for some portion of the contest, but was not able to match the Blue Devils for the entire round. The Wildcats were second with a 323.

Sectional host Fairview stayed in contention with a good enough round of 346, moving the Aggies into the sub-state series.

Springville got the last berth with a 357, beating out West Point by two shots. The Warriors carded a 359, which was pleasing to head coach Jimmy Harbison, considering the challenges by the wind all day.

Corner was sixth with a 360 while Alexandria earned seventh place at 365 and Mortimer Jordan eighth place with a 437.

The best individual score for the day turned out to be a pair of Etowah golfers. Eli Antisdel and Gage Ledbetter each shot a 3-over par 74, tying for low medalist.

Right behind Antisdel and Ledbetter was Etowah teammate Tee Brown with a five-over par 76, tied for fourth with Hayden's A.J. Jarmon and Jake Hall. Garrison Smith of Hayden was next with a 77 while Alex Argo of Hayden and Josh Barnes of Fairview both carded a 79 to finish in the Top 10.

Eight shot between 3-over and 8-over that was pleasing to Craig. This was the second event in a month span at Chesley that has been played under a wind advisory by the National Weather Service from Huntsville.

The rest of the scoring for the Aggies included Hunter McKelvy's 80, Hunter Yeager's 90 and Jacob Allen's 97.

West Point was led by Brandon Farley and Graham Nelson, each with an 87, Alex Barton shot a 92 and Dave Doss had a 93.

Springville edged the Warriors with Nate Harbuck scoring an 86, Jack Hobbs 87, Ryan Harbuck 88 and Bradley Medaris a 96.

The four best individual scores (not from the top four teams) were Austin Bush of Corner and Hayden West of Curry with an 82, Hunter Dailey of Moody an 83 and Hunter Walls of Alexandria with an 84.

Farley, Nelson, Alex Edge of Etowah and Logan Goble of Alexandria just missed out with a score of 87.
