Local teams and players kicked off state tennis play today in the first day of the 2017 Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) state tennis tournaments.
Cullman's Lady Bearcats are competing in the 6A division at Point Mallard Park in Decatur. The St. Bernard Saints, West Point Lady Warriors and Warriors have made the journey to the coast for the 2A & 5A championships at the Mobile Tennis Center.
Cullman girls in 6A:
DECATUR – Kacie Donaldson was the No. 1 seed in the No. 1 singles, waiting to face the winner of a match between Homewood and Gulf Shores in the round of 16.
Reagan Martin was defeated in the No. 5 singles in the first round by an opponent from Northridge of Tuscaloosa. Emily Hancock enjoyed a victory in round one against an opponent from Gulf Shores. Hancock advanced to the quarterfinals, and is waiting to face the No. 6 single representing Northridge.
All three of the Lady Bearcats' doubles team suffered first-round losses that knocked them out of competition.
West Point Girls, Varsity in 5A:
MOBILE – West Point's Lady Warriors earned a 2-3 record in first-round play in the singles competition.
Emily Smith had a bye in round one of the No. 1 singles, then was defeated by Erianna Irvin of Etowah 6-0, 6-0.
Katie Coleman was defeated in the No. 2 singles in the first round by Minhee Jeon from Loveless Academic Magnet Program (LAMP) of Montgomery 6-0, 6-0.
Paige Quick fell in a hard fought first round in the No. 3 singles, dropping the tiebreaker to Katy Hardin of Westminster Christian 6-7, 7-5, 6-7.
A tiebreaker involved No. 4 singles player Annalyse Cole, in which she defeated Lariza Delgado of Russellville 3-6, 7-6, 6-2. Cole lost in the quarterfinals to Glynn Case of St. Paul's 6-0, 6-0.
Caroline Thompson dropped a first round decision in the No. 5 singles to Emma Lynn of Westminster Christian 6-3, 6-1.
Micah Oldacre competed in the No. 6 singles and earned a straight sets victory in the first round over Kaylee Holland of Russellville 6-2, 6-4. Oldacre was eliminated in the quarters by Anne Holway of Deshler 6-4, 6-2.
In No. 1 doubles, Smith and Coleman gained a first round bye, but could not stay in contention, being eliminated by Jenna Prater and Maggie Sullivan of UMS Wright 6-0, 6-0.
Thompson and Quick in the No. 2 doubles defeated Ella Newell and Chloe Newell of Catholic-Montgomery 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round. They suffered a quarterfinal round defeat to Callie Ware and Kaitlyn Bussey of Briarwood Christian 6-2, 6-0.
Cole and Oldacre competed in the No. 3 doubles, losing in the first round to Vivian Stabler and Caroline Vargas of St. Paul's 6-2, 6-2.
Carson Moon entered the tournament as the top seed in No. 1 singles. Moon had an incredible run on Monday, sweeping Cooper Lawrence of Fayette County 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16. Moon was edged out by Alex Wisener of Douglas in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-0.
Moon joined Matt McDonald in the No. 1 doubles with the pair earning a first round bye, then getting a victory over Tyler Seifert and Kyle Hammick of Corner 6-4, 6-1. That put them in the semifinal round vs. Luke Wolf and John Wolf of Briarwood Christian.
The semifinals will take place Tuesday morning at the Mobile Tennis Center.
St. Bernard in 2A:
MOBILE – Appearing in the AHSAA tournament for the first time ever, St. Bernard began its agenda with Duy Nguyen winning in the opening round of the No. 1 singles by a score of 6-4, 6-1 against Wil McKelvy of Shoals Christian.
Nguyen got shut out in the second round to James Torbert of Montgomery Academy 6-0, 6-0.
Jalen Lee won in the first round of No. 2 singles, getting the best of Nash Diercks from T.R. Miller 6-7, 6-4, 6-1. Lee lost in the second round to Noah Carlock from Lexington 6-4, 6-4.
Chann Pharm had a good outing in No. 3 singles. Pharm topped Trent Fendley of Pleasant Valley in the second round 6-1, 6-3, but was ousted in the quarterfinals by William Robertson of Montgomery Academy 6-3, 6-1.
Sam Chiodo got a bye in the first round of No. 4 singles, before seeing his time on the court end in a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Arjun Gurn of Altamont.
David Kim was eliminated in the opening round of the No. 5 singles by 6-1, 6-0 score to Dallon Walls of Montgomery Academy.
William Tang battled in the No. 6 singles and was defeated in round one by Hamilton Chapman of Montgomery Academy 6-0, 6-0.
Nguyen and Jaylen Lee fell in the No. 1 doubles to Tanner Hearing and Clark Thompson from American Christian Academy 6-0, 6-4 in the first round.
Phamm and Chiodo dropped a 6-1, 6-1 opening round match to Will Tucker and Trey Craven of Houston Academy.
Kim and Tang swept Covenant Christian's Noah Coan and Mac Booth 6-2, 6-2 in the first round before being eliminated by Mac Lidkay and Arjun Lakhanpal from Altamont 6-0, 6-0.
