CULLMAN – Hanceville High School got a big hand-up from the Cullman County Community Development Commission (CCCDC) Monday evening. The school received a $50,000 grant to go toward much-needed repairs to its track and field.
Funding for CCCDC grants comes from taxes- Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in lieu of taxes and beer taxes. The CCCDC began the evening with $116,482.67 in available funds; however, the board has a $100,000 reserve policy, meaning grants are not issued except under extraordinary circumstances, so as to not fall below the reserve level.
Such extraordinary circumstances were met by the request from Hanceville High School, which had the recommendation of all members of Cullman’s legislative delegation- Sen. Paul Bussman, R-Cullman; Rep. Randall Shedd, R-Fairview; Rep. Corey Harbison, R-Good Hope and Rep. Ed Henry, R-Hartselle.
After awarding the grant to Hanceville High, CCCDC Acting Chairman Bill Strandlund announced his intentions to resign from his post, effective Tuesday morning, April 18.
Said Strandlund, “I have decided to hand my letter of resignation to Senator Bussman tomorrow morning…. I will let my five and a half years of service stand on its own. I appreciate the opportunity to work with you guys.”
The CCCDC was left with $66,482.67 after granting Hanceville’s request. The next meeting will be held at Cullman City Hall on June 15 at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
CCCDC board members are appointed by Alabama state legislators.

- Josh Speakman- Henry
