FAIRVIEW – Thirteen prep golf teams and 13 individuals took to Cross Creek Golf Course Thursday afternoon for the annual Fairview High School Golf Invitational.
West Morgan made the best of an afternoon with temperatures in the 40s and a wind blowing around 10 miles per hour, by taking home the championship with a team score of 319.
Thanks to Dakota Terry shooting a 2-over par 74 and Wyant Smith a 7-over par 79, the Rebels created plenty of space between themselves and the rest of the field, in the first official local invitational of the new season.
Finishing a distant second to the Rebels was Albertville with a 350, while Fairview was third overall with a 352.
Leading the way for the Aggies was Hunter McKelvy, who claimed the individual title with a 1-over par 73. Hunter Yeager shot an 88, while Josh Barnes had a 93 and Jacob Allen a 98 to close out the Aggies' team total.
The Cullman Bearcats earned fourth place with a 374 as Holder Atchinson and Ben Hunter each fired an 88 to lead the club. Joe Wachter and Shea Donnelley each completed the round with a score of 99.
DAR took home fifth best score with a 380, while Altamont was next with a 385, Brewer a 393, Good Hope 423, Hartselle 451, Fairview II 479, Hanceville 496 and Brewer II with a 521.
Cole Pearson of Good Hope, one of the top local golfers from 2016, performed well for the Raiders, with a 3-over par 75 to finish third behind McKelvy and Terry.
Dawson Foust from Holly Pond joined Section's Matt Wilson in a top five finish with a 6-over par 78. Foust made his season appearance after finishing his basketball career two weeks earlier for the Broncos in the 3A state semifinals at Birmingham.
Zack Hudson had the best round of the afternoon for Hanceville with a 98. Carter Robinson scored a 98 for the best outing by Fairview's second group.
The conditions were much better Thursday than earlier in the week with rain and bitter cold keeping the players off the course.
Fairview coach Kurt Knight reported the girls' invitational has been rescheduled to Friday with an 8 a.m. start.
A good number of these teams and individuals will journey to Terri Pines Country Club for the Good Hope Invitational on Monday.
Weather conditions are expected to be around average for the first day of spring with the tournament to begin at 10 a.m.
