HANCEVILLE – On Mar. 16-17, Hanceville High School will host a National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) regional archery tournament. Competition will run from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days, with awards given out at the close of the tournament on the 17th. Cullman City Parks and Recreation will host its own NASP/ASA competition concurrently at Hanceville Middle School; that event will be open to all competitors.
Launched in 2002, NASP uses archery to promote discipline, attention, listening, development of motor skills, and development of/appreciation for outdoor activities and skills. The program is offered through schools and homeschool associations. To create and maintain a level playing field (to keep affluent schools and competitors from dominating tournaments with fancy equipment), all competitors use the same type of bow and arrows: draw length and draw weight can be slightly adjusted on the lightweight compound bows; but no counter-weights, sights or mechanical devices can be added to the basic off-the-shelf setup of the bow.
In a press release, Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Regional Hunter Education Coordinator Stuart Goldsby shared:
“From day one, Cullman County has been host for this Regional beginning with Good Hope H.S. The only regional in the state to rotate among participating schools within your Districts, West Point hosted last year, Hanceville H.S is this year’s host, Cullman’s East Elementary will host next year with Holly Pond to follow. We also have many Private and Home School participants in the area to participate.
One of only 9 regionals, Hanceville will host schools from all over Northcentral Alabama with over 600 High, Middle, and Elementary participants and families attending. This year the NASP Bullseye tournament will be held in the Hanceville H.S. gymnasium. Cullman City Parks and Recreation will be hosting a NASP/ASA 3-D tournament in the M.S. gymnasium. Alabama Army National Guard will attend with their METS team and interactive Climbing Wall. We also have Jeh Jeh Pruitt, FOX 6’s Good Day Alabama, broadcasting live morning of the 16th.
A recognized activity by Alabama State Board of Education, over 400 NASP schools state wide will program archery for 50,000 students this year. Many will go beyond the classroom to represent Alabama in Louisville, Kentucky. for national honors, participate in park and recreation programs, and local tournaments state wide.
The Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries is proud to be the sponsor of this program changing lives one arrow at a time and we look forward to seeing you there.”
