FAIRVIEW – Mark your calendars for March 18. That’s when, in the Fairview High School lunchroom, the $10,000 Fairview Alumni Association Drawdown will take place. The event will get underway with a meal at 5 p.m., with the drawing at 6 p.m.
The event, which is the association’s largest annual fundraiser, raises money for the five scholarships that the association awards to deserving students from Fairview High School.
The drawdown is led by Alumni Association President Mark West.
There are only 250 tickets sold to the event each year, and there are still some available.
“And you do not have to be present to win,” said West.
“They have been doing this since the 1980s, and we are currently helping about 16 students pay for college,” West explained.
The association doles out five scholarships each year. Three of the awards are 4-year, $1,000 per-year awards, and the other two are $1,000 per-year scholarships for students attending a trade school.
“We select the winners of the scholarships based on the results of the scholarship application,” West said. “This takes into consideration the applicant’s test scores, their GPA and their actual financial need. All of that is added up and scored by volunteers from the Fairview High School faculty, and the scholarships go to the students with the highest scores.”
While the drawdown helps supply the scholarship fund with money, a percentage of the cash raised during the event also goes back to the school to help with other needs around campus.
According to West, the funds are dispersed throughout the elementary, middle and high school, to help tackle needed projects.
“Last year some of the money was used to help replace the curtains that had become too old,” he said.
