CULLMAN – Cullman took on Hazel Green on day two of the Cullman Shamrock Invitational. It was a very physical game between both teams, and Cullman took advantage of some sloppy passing by the Lady Trojans, scoring one in each half, holding off a late scoring opportunity by Hazel Green to win, 2-1.
It only took 1:48 for the Lady Trojans to score first, as Sierra Rievley put it past Ashley Grace Uphold to give Hazel Green a 1-0 lead. Each team had some opportunities, but big saves by Uphold and the Trojans' Madison Beard kept it at a 1-0 game. With 9:32 remaining in the first half, Abby Branham got a great pass from Ninfa Moreno and scored to tie the game at one, which was the score at intermission.
The game got physical in the first half and it continued into the second. At the 4:42 mark, Abby Lawson got a sweet pass from Della Kelly and kicked it to the left of Beard into the net to give the Lady Bearcats a 2-1 lead. Cullman had some golden opportunities to increase the lead, but they could not capitalize as Hazel Green stopped any offensive momentum the Lady Bearcats had. The Lady Trojans looked to tie the game late, but Uphold and the Cullman defense kept them off the scoreboard in the second half to win 2-1.
Cullman improved to 11-2-1 on the season and will take on West Point next Thursday. Hazel Green dropped their first game of the season, falling to 5-1 and will head home to take on Florence on March 21.
