FAIRVIEW – Last year, representatives of the Lions Club of Fairview told the Tribune that they hoped to increase the number of family-friendly community activities in their town, and they are staying true to their word.

On Saturday, Apr. 1, the Lions will host a free Spring Fling at Fairview Park.  Activities will abound, and folks will be coming from all over to bring fun and interesting things to see and do.

  •     The U.S. Army will be bringing vehicles and activities for the kids to see and climb on.
  •     AirEvac Lifeteam will be bringing one of its helicopters.
  •     The Soil and Water Conservation District will be bringing out a trailer full of goodies.
  •     The North Alabama Agriplex will be bringing out experiments and activities.
  •     Rickwood/Cathedral Caverns will be sending someone out with fossils and minerals.
  •     Cullman Regional will offer free health screenings.
  •     LifeSouth will be holding a blood drive.
  •     Arts and crafts for sale
  •     Carnival games for kids
  •     Lions will be selling BBQ chicken plates for $10.

All the money raised through games and food will go to support Lions Club projects.

Lions spokeswoman Stephanie Giancatarino shared a little about one of the Lions’ most well-known charitable efforts:

“Probably the biggest of the projects is helping those who can't afford glasses get them. We recently had a woman who could not afford an exam, let alone glasses. Through the funding we have, she was able to get the exam she needed and the glasses. She also found out through the exam she had the beginning stages of glaucoma. So we were able to get her started on some medicine to help keep it from progressing. Had she not gotten the exam, she would have never known and would have eventually lost her sight completely.”

She also spoke about the Lions’ community activities in Fairview:

“This Spring Fling is just another way we can also reach out to the community and let them know we are here. We want to help in whatever ways we can. This last year we have really hoped to branch out further and do some more fun things in the community to bring others together for some good, clean family fun. We did the movie in the park at Halloween and the Christmas tree parade with the tree lighting,  both of which will be happening again this year. We are looking to offer opportunities throughout the entire year.”

If you live in the Fairview area, be on the lookout for even more Lions Club activities, like pancake breakfasts and more movies in the park.  Labor Day will see possibly the biggest event of the year, with a parade and celebration at the park.

“To me,” said Giancatarino, “the biggest blessing is being able to reach out and help others.  I'm not much, but God gave me a big heart for a reason.  Why not share it with others?  I feel most of us in the group feel the same way.  We just want to do what we can, and help where God leads us.  I get a lot of joy out of seeing families together having a good time and they don't have to worry about things being unsafe or questionable.  Kids are allowed to be kids, and the parents are able to enjoy themselves too.”
