A celebration of life for Wallace Kay Barnett, 82, of Hanceville will be Monday, March 6, 2017 at 11 a.m. at East Side Baptist Church; Rev. Tony Tidwell and Rev. Ken Allen officiating; with interment with military honors in Hopewell Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Hanceville Funeral Home.
Mr. Barnett passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2017.
He was born in Warrior, Alabama to Ervin M. and Eula Gamble Barnett. He grew up in the Hanceville area and graduated from Hanceville High School in 1952. At the age of 21, he entered the U.S. Navy and loved his duties on submarines. He spent 22 years on active duty and he and his family traveled the nation. But after retirement, he returned home with his family to Hanceville. Here, he began his second career with 3M Company in Decatur, Alabama. He retired from 3M after 16 years of service.
For the past several years, he has been known as “Mr. Kay” at McDonalds in Hanceville. He loved all of the kids that came in and none left without a toy. He was always busy helping others. He loved the Hanceville Lions Club and lived by the Lion’s motto “WE SERVE”. Whether it was cooking pancakes or selling Boston butts, he was always having fun. It was an honor for him to receive the highest honor given to a Lion, the Melvin Jones Fellows Award in 2005. He was an avid supporter of Wallace State College and loved Auburn University football. He attended all of Auburn’s home games for many years and tail-gating was an event for him!
He is survived by his loving wife, Selma Davenport Barnett; daughter, Sherri (Chuck) Troxler; son, Stephen (Kristi) Barnett; grandson, Stephen Michael Barnett; great-grandson, Waylon Kolt Barnett; granddaughter, Aimee Troxler (Nate) Longo; great-grandson, Daniel Flahart and great-granddaughters, Kinsley Flahart and Laikyn Longo.
He is also survived by very special friend, Zac Scott, who has been like another grandchild, and his mother, DeAnn Scott Ferrell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold, Raymond, Alan and Russell Barnett and sister, Margaret Barnett Hester.
His family is proud and thankful for his blessed life and the legacy he leaves.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Chamblee, Larry Cornelius, Danny Taylor, Bob Stephens, Chris Wright, Rex Jordan, Matt Bailey, Bob Schultz and Kenneth Quick.
