HOLLY POND – It was total domination from the opening to the final horn Tuesday night as the Holly Pond Broncos took care of the Susan Moore Bulldogs in the first round of the 3A Area 11 Tournament.
Matt Cahoon immediately set the tone for the game when he received an alley-oop pass from Bailey Smith that he threw down two-handed on the first possession of the game. Drew Jones added 10 while Smith dropped in four as the Broncos spent the rest of the eight-minute quarter building a huge 36-7 lead heading into the second.
Just like the first, Holly Pond started the second off with a bang going on a 10-3 run to push the lead to 36. Isaac Adams buried a three to try and stop the bleeding but the Broncos answered with a 13-5 run to end the quarter up 61-18.
It was more of the same in the third, with Holly Pond dominating the paint and the perimeter while keeping Susan Moore in check with hard-nosed defense. Jacob Harris, Michael Lambert, Griffin Morris, Gunter Hollis, Cahoon and Jones each scored for the Broncos in the third as they took an 88-26 advantage to the fourth.
With no running clock in tournament play, the Broncos quickly hit the century mark thanks to a 12-0 run that was led by Caleb Jones and Harris. Late in the fourth, Holly Pond reached another milestone in their record-breaking season as they scored 117 points to break the old Holly Pond record for points scored in a single game that was set in the 1978-79 basketball season. Holly Pond defeated Susan Moore by a final score of 117-42 to set up a 2A Area 11 championship final with the Locust Fork Yellow Jackets, who defeated Pennington 78-57 in the first game.
The final is set for Friday at 6 p.m. at Holly Pond.
