CULLMAN – The youth of Sacred Heart Catholic Church have begun their second annual Relay for Life campaign. The group held a fundraiser over the weekend to help raise money toward their initial goal of $1,000. The youth put together a two-part event: the first part a soup dinner, and the second part a Bingo game.
Youth directors Jacqueline Hill and Fharis Richter worked to put together a menu of six different soups made from scratch to feed 100 people. Patrons were able to choose from red beans and rice, Brunswick stew, cheesy potato soup, taco soup, chili, and ham and bean soup. Accompanying the dishes were crackers, corn chips and several loaves of bread, all donated by Publix. Publix also contributed a majority of the deserts, including banana bread, apple strudel and king cake, while a few volunteers brought treats of their own to share. Throughout the night, a team of 13 youth volunteers helped set up, prepare and serve food and drinks.
After the supper, people who wished to take part in the Bingo game moved to the conference room, where they enjoyed several rounds of good-natured joking from the caller. The games started out as standard rules and prices for half the pot, ending with a slight price increase for a cover-all game and 75 percent of the pot. By the end of the game, the youth made $74.50 forward their goal.
Sacred Heart Youth raised $798.55. Hill says that while their goal has yet to be reached, they have had a few donations from individuals and are hosting another fundraiser very soon. The youth will hold a bake sale at the church on Sunday, Feb. 12 after the 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. masses. Donations to the Relay for Life fund can also be sent to the church office to the attention of Jacqueline Hill.
