BREMEN – It was a successful night for both the boys’ and girls’ squads of Cold Springs High School as they defended their home court from the visiting Good Hope Raiders.

Four quarters of action were not enough to contain the Cold Springs Eagles and the Good Hope Raiders. With both teams hungry for a win and the all-important momentum heading into the Cullman County Basketball Tournament next week, it took overtime to decide the victor Friday night.

Senior standout Matt Cofer got the Raiders on the board first with a 3-point basket from the wing but Jesse Lee answered right back for Cold Springs, setting the tone for the game and assuring the fans that they were in for a non-stop run and gun game. The two teams played even the first quarter, swapping points and playing hard-nosed defense that led to a 12-12 stalemate after one quarter of play.

It was the Eagles who got on the board first in the second with a pair of free throws from Mason Harris. Isaac McDonald answered for Good Hope, but Cold Springs scored the next four to push ahead 18-14.  The Raiders pulled even midway through the frame, and thanks to some great shooting from Cofer and McDonald pulled ahead 28-23 heading to the locker room at the break.

Both teams came out of the locker room shooting hot, matching each other bucket for bucket. The play was up and down the floor with Cold Spring and Good Hope mirroring one another, leading to a 52-52 score at the end of regulation to send the hotly contested game into overtime.

Cold Springs got on the board first in the overtime period and never looked back. Lee stepped in front of a Good Hope pass and took it the other way for an easy layup. He scored again just one possession later when he picked up the transition bucket off of a huge Eli Hamby block. Good Hope kept it close with strong play from Kallen Sharpton, Cofer and McDonald, but they could not get over the hump and get closer than one as Cold Springs held on to win by a final score of 60-57 in OT.

Cold Springs 59, Good Hope 33 (Girls)

Some say that if you live by the 3-point shot, you will die by the 3-point shot. Well the Cold Springs Lady Eagles showed they had plenty of living to do as they dropped in 13 3-point baskets, seven of which were drained by sophomore Camryn Crider, on their way to a 59-33 defeat of the Good Hope Lady Raiders.

Cold Springs started the game with an early barrage of points with a pair of threes from Crider and a deep ball by Emme Willoughby that was sandwiched around a Good Hope basket by Sadie Abbott. The ladies in white and blue continued their assault from 3-point land, scoring 21 of their 23 first-quarter points from downtown to take a commanding 23-6 lead after just a quarter of play.

Good Hope scored the first five of the second quarter on a three by Leyton Seal and a two-point basket by Erika Woodall, but Cold Springs answered with a pair of threes from Crider along with four points from Willoughby and a free throw from Aubrey Negron to give the Lady Eagles a comfortable 34-13 lead heading to the half.

With the halftime break doing seemingly nothing to slow down the Lady Eagles’ momentum, Cold Springs continued to pour in the points in the second half, triggering a hot clock early in the fourth quarter as the cruised to a 59-33 victory.
