ADDISON – The Addison girls’ and boys’ teams looked to advance to the championship game tomorrow night against Winston County with wins over Meek. Only the girls advanced, while the boys fell.
Addison 53, Meek 34 (Girls)
It was a very slow start for both teams as turnovers piled up on both sides. Addison held a 5-3 lead early after a three by Macey Butler and a layup by Kaylee Brummett. Both teams got sloppy for most of the first quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs finally got it together and finished the quarter strong as Maison Evans and Brummett scored the last six points for Addison to take an 11-4 lead after one.
Addison continued their strong play in the second quarter as they outscored Meek, 14-5, and allowed just a layup, as they took a 25-9 lead into the locker room.
Addison outscored Meek, 13-11 in the third quarter, to take a 38-20 lead into the final quarter. Amanda Cunningham looked to help start a rally for the Lady Tigers as she scored 10 fourth-quarter points, but it was be too little, too late, as Addison got balanced scoring to advance to the championship game at 5:30 tomorrow night against Winston County, who defeated Lynn last night, 65-25.
Evans finished with 14 points for Addison. Butler had 13 and Brummett ended up with 11. The Lady Bulldogs improve to 17-3 on the season.
Cunningham finished with 17 points for Meek, who fall to 6-13 on the season. They will travel to Brilliant next Wednesday night.
Meek 68, Addison 57 (Boys)
It was a fast-paced first quarter for both squads as a combined 31 points were scored. Meek's Jacob Woodard had a quarter he will never forget, scoring 10 first-quarter points, but Addison had four players in the scoring column as the Bulldogs took a 17-14 lead after one.
The fast pace continued into the second quarter, as each team looked for that extra momentum going into the locker room. Addison held a slim 33-30 lead, but two free throws cut the lead to one, and Woodard nailed a three just before the buzzer sounded to give the Tigers a 35-33 lead.
Meek increased their lead to 47-39 on back-to-back layups by Dillon Barker with 4:07 remaining in the third quarter. Woodard pushed the lead to double digits on a floater by Woodard, but Addison finished the quarter on a 7-1 run to cut the lead to 50-46 after three.
Addison looked for one final run to take the lead as they cut the lead to 58-56 on a Braxton Preuitt layup with 2:15 remaining in the game, but they never quite got the lead as John Abercrombie and Woodard were just too much at the end and the Bulldogs got outscored, 10-1, the rest of the way and fell by 11.
Woodard finished with 25 points, six rebounds and a pair of steals for Meek. Abercrombie had 16 points, seven rebounds and added a steal. Barker ended up with eight points, four rebounds and two steals. Kenneth Sherer had seven points and four rebounds. The Tigers improve to 11-8 on the season and will take on Winston County at 6:45 in the championship game.
Logan Wilkins finished with a double-double for Addison with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He added two steals. Preuitt had 13 points, three rebounds and a steal. Jake Blackburn finished with eight points and three steals, and Matthew Mann ended up with seven points and seven rebounds. The Bulldogs fall to 3-14 on the season. They travel to Falkville on Monday.
