Obituary: Martha Carol McClain Hayes

Martha Carol McClain Hayes, 71 of Cullman, was received to Heaven Saturday, January 14th 2017. Martha was born September 22, 1945, daughter of the late James and Mildred Smith McClain of Ashville and Duck Springs Alabama.

Martha is survived by her husband of 52 years, Edwin, daughter Julie (Stephen) Brown; Sons: Jody (Charee) Hayes, and Jonathan (Kelly) Hayes, and her two sisters Ginny Tumlin and Kathy Smith.

"Momart" had seven grandchildren: Matthew, Charis and Caleb Brown; Jonah and Zeke Hayes; and Asa and Evy Hayes.

Mrs. Hayes was a graduate of Ashville High School, Snead College and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

She was a published author of the State Day of Prayer Program for Alabama Baptists and of Sunday School literature for Lifeway Christian Resources.

In addition to being a private piano teacher Martha also taught 5th and 6th grade Sunday School for 50 years. Martha was also a dedicated Mother's Day Out teacher for more than 15 years. Martha was an advocate for mental health serving as a board member for nearly 20 years on the Cullman County Mental Health Authority.

She was a patient and faithful pastor's wife, a loving mother, and doting grandmother lovingly named Momart with a love of travel developed through many national and international mission trips.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday at Moss Funeral Home. The celebration of her life will be held at First Baptist Church Cullman, Alabama at 2:00pm Wednesday, January 18th, 2017 lying in state from 1:00 – 2:00 pm. With interment at Cullman City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests gifts to be made in her memory to First Baptist Church Missions or The Cullman Mental Health Authority.
