St. Bernard sweeps Vinemont at home

CULLMAN – St. Bernard quickly recovered from a sweep at the hands of Cold Springs by delivering a sweep of their own at home against Vinemont.

St. Bernard 36, Vinemont 26 (Girls)

After both teams got off to slow starts on their first few possessions of the game, the Lady Saints got on the scoreboard first with 5:41 left in the opening quarter on a free throw by Anna Myers. Vinemont also got on the scoreboard at the free throw line as Sadie Stanley hit 1 of 2 with 4:47 left in the quarter. Stanley scored the first basket of the game for either team on a jumper with 4:14 remaining. Myers tied the game on a layup for the Lady Saints' first basket of the game with 3:13 left. It was a low-scoring first quarter for both sides, but St. Bernard took a 7-6 lead after one.

Four different Saints scored in the second quarter to increase their lead to 17-11, the largest lead for St. Bernard in the first half, but Vinemont finished strong as Lexi Helton scored the final four points for the Lady Eagles, cutting the lead to 17-15 at the half.

The Lady Saints increased their lead to 22-15 to start off the third quarter. After Sarah Smith cut the lead to five on a layup, a Myers free throw and back-to-back layups by McKenna Kline and Jasmine Sanders gave the Saints their biggest lead of the game, 27-17.

A Stanley three cut the lead to seven, but Myers and Sanders pushed the lead to 11 on back-to-back layups with 1:44 remaining in the third quarter. Madison Harbison hit a three from the right corner to cut the lead to eight at 31-23, which was the score after three.

A short jumper by Helton to start the final quarter swiveled the lead to 31-25, but turnovers hurt the Lady Eagles and the fourth saw both teams struggle offensively with bad shots and turnovers, but Emma Tafazoli and Kline gave the Lady Saints some insurance points to give them the double-digit win.

Kline led the Lady Saints with 11 points. She also added six rebounds and four steals. Myers finished with nine points, 10 rebounds and three steals, and Ashley Duke ended up with six points and three rebounds. St. Bernard improves to 8-8 on the season. They will stay at home against Whitesburg Christian tomorrow night in their second of four straight home games.

Stanley finished with eight points, four rebounds and four steals for Vinemont. Smith ended up with seven, and Helton finished with six points and six rebounds. They will head back home to take on Carbon Hill in search of their first win of the season.

St. Bernard 44, Vinemont 32 (Boys)

St. Bernard jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead behind four points by Eli Price and a layup by Christian Peterson. A Peterson three increased their lead to 9-5, but Garrett Boland countered with one of his own from the wing to cut the deficit to one. Price hit a layup to make the score 11-7, which was the score after one.

Another three by Peterson and a layup by Price pushed the lead to 16-7, but Dustin Ford nailed a three to cut the lead to five. Peterson and Price were hard to slow down for Vinemont as they scored the next five points to give them a 21-10 lead with 4:25 remaining in the first half.

The Eagles countered with a 9-3 run of their own to swivel the lead to 24-19. Luis Zatarain stopped the run with a three from the left wing and Peterson added a layup to push the lead back to double-digits at 29-19 at the half.

St. Bernard quickly increased their lead to 37-19 to start off the third quarter. Boland hit back-to-back threes to cut the lead to 37-25, but that was as close as they got as Miguel Sanchez hit a three of his own to make the score 40-25, which was the score after three. The Saints mostly ran clock in the final quarter to take home the double-digit win.

Peterson finished with 18 points and added a pair of steals. Price ended up with 14 points, seven rebounds, and added a block. The Saints improve to 6-9 on the season and will host Whitesburg Christian tomorrow night.

Boland finished with 12 points, five rebounds and a steal. Ford ended up with nine points and added a pair of rebounds. They will head back home to take on Carbon Hill in an area game.
