CULLMAN – The Cullman Lions Club presented Cullman Caring for Kids a very special gift Monday evening: a check for almost $19,000.
The club’s meeting, held at the All Steak Restaurant, started with a quick game of Christmas trivia and a few updates on the health of fellow members, followed by President Barry Willingham announcing upcoming birthdays and events. When all announcements were finished, a check of $18,860 was presented to Cullman Caring for Kids (CCK) from the Cullman Lions Club and friends.
More than half of the donation – $10,000 – was provided by the Lions Club. The rest of the money came from projects such as paid parking for Rock the South (which raised $6,558) and community donations.
"It's fantastic, it's incredible, it's needed. The Lions Club always comes through," Javon Daniel, executive director of CCK, said about the generous gift. "Cullman Caring for Kids can't say enough good about them."
CCK is able to provide roughly seven pounds of food for every dollar donated, so the check provided will help the nonprofit procure approximately 132,000 pounds of food. Even more great news, the Lions Club announced that they will match any funds donated to Cullman Caring for Kids through the Cullman Lions charity after the new year.
The night concluded on a merry note with Lion Jim Walker leading the members in a series of Christmas carols such as "Joy to the World" and "Angels We Have Heard on High" before singing one last solo of "Sweet Little Jesus Boy."
President Barry Willingham reminded the group that the next meeting would not be until Jan. 9.
