Beautiful Christmas décor on this year’s Christmas Tour of Homes

CULLMAN – This time of year, there is a lot of hustle and bustle, the weather turns sharply colder and people are often preoccupied with their Christmas shopping, parties and trips out of town. But for those in our community who are sick or have relatives who are in the care of hospice, the holidays can be a time of great stress.

However, there are people and organizations who are dedicated to helping those who find themselves in a medical crisis. The Share Club is one such organization, dedicated to raising funds to help with medical expenses at Hospice of Cullman County and the Good Samaritan Clinic.

Since 1972, members of the Share Club have been working behind the scenes, helping provide funds so that these agencies can carry on their vital work in our area. In order to do this, they need sponsors whose donations make this work possible.

The Share Club also holds annual fundraisers, like this past spring’s Valentine’s Party and auction, held in conjunction with the Good Samaritan Clinic at Top of The Town.

The recent Christmas Tour of Homes in Cullman is also one of their annual fundraising events.

“We have some wonderful homeowners who were willing to open their homes to others for this event,” said co-chairperson for the tour, Mary Jane Waldrop. Fellow co-chairman this year is Maria Stanford.

This year’s tour was very successful in spite of dreary weather.

“The community has been very supportive of this event,” Waldrop continued.

Over the past 40 years the Share Club’s efforts have resulted in $163,000 in funding which has been distributed throughout the community to help support worthy causes.

“We couldn’t do this without the help of our sponsors and the community,” Waldrop stressed.

The club holds monthly meetings for nine months of each year, at which approximately 34 members bring items that are in need by Hospice of Cullman County, such as T-shirts, flat sheets or gift cards. The organization also relies on the donations of the 51 community sponsors who donate $100 each per year to the cause.

“We always welcome more sponsors,” said Waldrop. “We could not do what we do without their support.”

Charter members of the group include Susan Powell, who was the Share Club’s first president, Linda Price and Connie Johnson Hardiman.  Current, active charter members are Deborah McAfee and Bonnie Heatherly. Mary Leah Moss serves as the current president of the club.
