WEST POINT – It was a full night of action Monday as the West Point Warriors played host to the Lawrence County Red Devils in high school hoops action.

Lawrence County 68, West Point 67

If you like back and forth action, then you were not disappointed when West Point and Lawrence County took the floor for the boys’ varsity match-up.

West Point controlled the opening tip but had the ball stripped and taken the other way by Marquis Taylor for two of his 21 points on the night. West Point quickly tied things up with an offensive board and put back by Kolton Sapp. Both teams continued the frantic pace, racing up and down the floor, scoring points and snagging rebounds. By the time the dust had settled at the end of the first eight minutes, West Point held a 16-11 advantage.

The Warriors scored four quick points to open the second and looked as if they were going to build an impressive run, but Taylor put an end to the streak with a deep three and started the Red Devils on a 10-2 run to pull Lawrence County to within one. The action went back and forth until the final two minutes when the Red Devils pulled ahead and took a 35-30 lead to the locker room thanks to a 10-0 run at the end of the half.

Much like the previous half, the second half was full of nip and tuck action and came down to the last play of the game. West Point scratched and clawed their way back to a tie, 66-66 with 1:32 left to play, taking advantage of five missed Red Devil free throws. Lawrence County reclaimed the lead, 68-67 and looked to put the game away but a turnover with 21.2 left in the game opened the door for West Point. After getting the ball in but not finding an open shot, West Point called a time-out with 4.9 on the clock.

Out of the timeout, West Point got a look at the basket, a 3-point attempt. As the Warrior launched the shot, he appeared to be hit on the hand and the whistle blew, but not in the favor of West Point. The shooter was deemed to be out of bounds, giving Lawrence County the 68-67 victory. West Point will  be in action next at home Tuesday night against the Cold Springs Eagles.

Dominate is the only way you can describe the performance by the West Point Lady Warriors as they controlled the game from the opening tip.

Bailee Yearwood scored the first points of the game when she knocked down a three to give the Lady Warriors the lead less than a minute into the game. It was a lead they never lost. Yearwood and Miriam Oldeacre did the bulk of the scoring in the first, aided by Olivia Ball and Lexi Shadix to build an 11-point lead that  never dropped below double digits.

West Point experienced an offensive explosion in the second, opening the quarter on a 16-2 run and outscoring Lawrence County 23-8 to take a 42-16 lead to the half.

Lawrence County looked as if they were gaining some ground in the third, scoring seven unanswered points in the first two minutes of the second half, prompting a timeout from the Lady Warriors. The break in the action did the Lady Warriors good as the settled in and held the Lady Red Devils to just three points for the rest of the quarter while adding to their lead thanks to back-to-back threes by Micah Oldeacre and Shadix, pushing the lead to 31. The fourth was played with a hot clock, with West Point taking the victory 68-44 to improve to 10-0 on the season as they head into Tuesday night’s match-up against the Cold Springs Lady Eagles.
