VINEMONT – For Brittany Hamm, daughter of Vinemont house fire victim, Keith Chumley, Thanksgiving was bittersweet. She spent the most of the day at the University of Birmingham (UAB) ICU Burn Unit, visiting her father as permitted, thankful that he was alive, although suffering with third-degree burns over approximately 40-50 percent of his body.

“He is still heavily sedated,” said Hamm. “As of now, we don’t know exactly what happened, and we won’t know until he can tell us.”

Chumley’s wife, Kim Chumley, lost her life in the fire, which occurred on Saturday, Nov. 19, a little after 9:30 p.m. at 105 County Road 1332.

Keith Chumley, 52, remains in critical condition, on a ventilator, with feeding and breathing tubes, until his body recovers sufficiently.

According to Hamm, the state fire marshal has not released any information at this point. The investigation is ongoing, and no foul play is suspected.

“It’s all speculation right now,” she said. “No one knows, although I’ve seen statements on Facebook but that’s all they are – speculation.”

The couple’s two dogs, Costa and Chance, were not harmed in the fire.

At this time, no details about Kim Chumley’s memorial arrangements are available. Friends of the family have set up a Go Fund Me page to help the family with the costs involved; visit https://www.gofundme.com/funeral-expense-for-kim-chumley for information on how you can help.
