BREMEN – In an early season matchup of two of the top teams in the county, Cold Springs took both the boys’ and girls’ games Friday night at home.
Cold Springs 55, Fairview 50 (Boys)
Twenty-six minutes. That is how long it took Cold Springs to capture their first lead of the game Friday night, but the Eagles had the lead when it counted the most…when the clock hit triple zeros.
Bryson Fletcher got things off on the right foot for the Fairview Aggies, drilling a three to open the game. Hunter McClendon answered with a pair of free throws for Cold Springs and both teams were off to the races. Fairview went up by as much as six in the frame, but the Eagles cut the lead to just three at the end of the first quarter.
Jesse Lee started the second with a pair of shots from the charity stripe. Fairview answered with a three from Tyler Ball and a pair of free throws of their own from Lucas Yarbrough. Cold Springs scored their next two trios down the floor to pull to within two before Fisher Willoughby was hit with a technical foul for shoving a Fairview player after a loose ball went out of bounds. Yarbrough hit both free throws, but could not convert the free possession. Cold Springs answered on their end with two from the free throw line from Eli Hamby. The two teams swapped points for the rest of the frame with Fairview holding on to a slight 2-point lead at the half.
The Aggies quickly pushed their lead to six before Willoughby dropped in a pair of free throws. The rest of the quarter played even until Fairview head coach Eddie Groves was hit with a technical foul for arguing a call. Hamby converted one of the free throws to knot the game at 35 heading to the fourth and final quarter.
Blake Wood gave Cold Springs their first lead of the contest from the free-throw line, drilling both chances. He then added a 2-point bucket to push the lead to four, prompting an Aggie timeout. Cold Springs held the lead until Yarbrough hit a pair of free throws to give the lead back to Fairview with 1:23 left to play. Down by one, Lee decided to take the game into his own hands. He scored six of the last eight Cold Springs’ points to help ensure an Eagle win. Willoughby scored the last two points of the game, fittingly from the free throw line where Cold Springs dominated the entire game, to seal the deal and give Cold Springs the 55-50 victory.
Cold Springs 58, Fairview 42 (Girls)
It was raining threes early on in the girls’ contest. The Lady Eagles, led by Elizabeth Hill with a trifecta of threes, jumped out to an early lead over Fairview to force a timeout less than two minutes into the game. Out of the break Fairview started to find the range with buckets by Daylia Dean and McKenna Yearwood but still trailed the Lady Eagles 14-8 after one.
Cold Springs started the second with an onslaught of offense, going on a 7-0 run before the Lady Aggies could score their first bucket of the second frame. However, Fairview settled down and played Cold Springs close for the rest of the quarter and only trailed by six heading to the halftime break.
Led by Emme Willoughby and Hill, Cold Springs scored the first 13 points of the second half before Abby Schnittker drained a three to put Fairview on the board. The Lady Aggies went on to score the next five before Willoughby knocked down a bucket to put the Lady Eagles on top by 13 heading to the fourth.
Cold Springs and Fairview spent the majority of the fourth quarter swapping points, but thanks in part to four straight free throws by Camryn Crider, Cold Springs was able to hold on to the lead they built in the first and went on to win the contest by a final score of 58-42.
