CULLMAN – Cullman’s retired educators were recently recognized with a proclamation signed by Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs proclaiming Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, “Retired Teachers’ Day” in the city of Cullman. The proclamation was issued in conjunction with National Education Week, which is Nov. 14-18, 2016.

On hand to accept the proclamation on behalf of the Cullman Education Retirees Association (CERA) were President JoAnne Minnitt, Dr. Donald E. Green and Kay Callan.

“I am happy to honor our retired teachers by proclaiming ‘Retired Teachers’ Day’ in Cullman,” said Jacobs. “I encourage our citizens to take this opportunity to pay tribute to our retired teachers, as well.”

In 1990, the Alabama State Legislature passed Senate Joint Resolution 82 (Act No. 90-183) establishing the Tuesday of American Education Week each year as “Retired Teachers’ Day.” This date is also recognized in the City of Cullman as a day to demonstrate honor and appreciation for retired educators in our community.

The proclamation issued by Jacobs reads as follows:

Whereas, education is the foundation of our society and is the most critical element in the progress and enlightenment of our state and nation; and,

Whereas, the educators in our educational system have carried the torch of knowledge, opening doors to the challenge and excitement of learning for countless youths; and,

Whereas, educators, because of their deep and abiding love for children, have displayed a commitment to their students and dedication to their profession; and,

Whereas, our community’s retired educators have served long careers, laboring throughout their tenures to educate our young people; and,

Whereas, retired educators in Cullman, and throughout the state of Alabama, are deserving of the highest praise and recognition we can bestow upon them for their devotion to their chosen profession.

Now, therefore, I, Woody Jacobs, as Mayor of the City of Cullman and on behalf of the Cullman City council and our citizens, do hereby proclaim November 15, 2016, RETIRED TEACHERS’ DAY in the City of Cullman, encouraging everyone to pay tribute to our retired educators for their contributions to the field of education and their invaluable influence upon and service to our community.
