CULLMAN – The City of Cullman tonight swore in its city council and new mayor for 2016-2020. It was a packed house at Cullman City Hall, with people filling the seats and lining the walls around the auditorium.

After an invocation by Rev. John Bussman of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Honor Guard of the Cullman City Police Department and Cullman Fire Rescue performed the ceremonial Presentation of Colors. The Pledge of Allegiance was followed by the Posting of the Colors by the Guard, and finally the singing of "God Bless America" by Katie Burney.

Judge Wells R. Turner, III had the honor of administering the oaths of office.

The 2016-2020 Cullman City Council includes:

Place 1: Andy Page

Place 2: Garlan E. Gudger, Jr.

Place 3: John W. Cook

Place 4: Clint Hollingsworth

Place 5: Jenny Folsom

And lastly, newly-elected mayor Woody Jacobs was sworn in to a rousing round of applause from all in attendance. Jacobs narrowly defeated incumbent mayor Max A. Townson in the Aug. 23 municipal election.

Cullman City Clerk Wesley Moore performed the official roll call after the new council and mayor were seated, and there was a brief organization meeting, where Gudger was again voted president of the city council and Folsom president pro-tem. City Attorney Roy Williams, Jr. was also reappointed to his position. Various board appointments were made among the council members, and Jacobs was appointed to the Cullman City Utilities Board.

Gudger took a moment to recognize special guest Mrs. Gracie Grissom, mother of Folsom, who will be celebrating her 100th birthday on Wednesday.

A reception was held in the lobby of Cullman City Hall following the meeting. The crowd included Alabama Sen. Paul Bussman, R-Cullman, Cullman County Commissioner Kerry Watson, Cullman City Police Chief Kenny Culpepper, Cullman Fire Rescue Chief Ed Reinhardt, Jr. and former mayor Don E. Green, just to name a few.
