CULLMAN – When you think of sports in Cullman County, baseball, football and basketball immediately come to mind, but how about bowling? For three local teams, it was not cleats or sneakers they laced up for competition Thursday afternoon, it was bowling shoes.

The St. Bernard Saints, West Point Warriors and Cullman Bearcats faced off in a three-way match that saw all threes squads bowl at the same time on different lanes. The first part of the competition consisted of one 10-pin game, the classic bowling game where each bowler rolls 10 frames and strives for 300, a perfect game. The second was three games of Baker Team competition, where each team rolls only one 10-frame game with each bowler on a five-person team alternating frames. The first bowler throws frames one and six, the second bowler two and seven, third three and eight, the fourth four and nine and the final bowler frames five and ten.

Cullman garnered the overall win Thursday afternoon, posting a score of 1279. The Bearcats scored 779 in the 10-pin game, 161 in the first Baker game, 180 in the second and finished with a 159 in the third.

West Point came in second with an overall score of 1155. In the 10-pin game the Warriors tallied 762 pins. The first Baker game saw them score 128, in the second the earned 131 and the team finished strong with 134 in the third.

The Saints of St. Bernard finished the match in third place. They started the afternoon with 631 in the 10-pin competition. They grabbed 118 pins in their first Baker game, 121 in the second and improved to 140 in the third.

As bowling is a relatively new high school sport in Cullman County, it was impressive to see the skill of all three squads. If you have the chance, come out and support these young athletes as they strive to make bowling popular in the world of high school athletics.
