Lutheran Ladies Aid Meets At Church
On Tuesday afternoon, December 10th, the Lutheran Ladies Aid met at the Lutheran Church. A beautiful program was presented. Scripture was read by Mrs. Ernest Grund. The Life of Paul was studied. A map was drawn by Mrs. Albert Burkart, showing the Journeys of Paul and she led the study. Mrs. Graf, Mrs. Albert Jochum and Mrs. J.N. McNutt, each gave further accounts of Paul’s journeys, which were traced on the map.
Reverend E.A. McGriff, of Lake, Mississippi, visited friends here on Thursday.
Mrs. Charlton McNeise visited relatives in Birmingham, last week.
Mrs. Ed Ashwander and Mrs. Christine Boub, of Cullman, spent Tuesday in Birmingham.
J.H. Caudell and Lee Jackson spent Monday in Birmingham.
Mrs. Henry Howle and Mrs. J.A. Howle, of Hartselle, spent last Thursday with Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Caudell.
Mrs. Willie Hulsey spent the weekend in Cullman, with friends.
Mrs. Maggie Williams visited relatives in Birmingham, last week.
Mrs. Harold Ingram and children, of Birmingham, are visiting her mother, Mrs. Mattie Freeman.
Mr. G.L. Sides spent the weekend in Bessemer.
Mr. and Mrs. T.R. Copeland, of Bessemer, visited friends on Sunday.
Mesdames Van Gibbs and Albert Burkart spent Wednesday in Birmingham.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Linton, of Vinemont, visited Mr. and Mrs. Jim Griffith, on Sunday.
From the Files of 1957:
Funeral services for Mrs. Edna E. Moore, 49, of Eva, were held on Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church.
The Reverend W.O. Hunt officiated. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, with Moss Service directing.
She is survived by her husband, Cranford Moore; three sons, O.C. Moore, C.L. Moore and J.H. Moore; a daughter, Mrs. Clarence Holmes; six grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters.
Specialist Second Class, Luther G. Tucker, 26, whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Luther H. Tucker, live on Route One, Cullman, will end the Christmas holidays in Hawaii with members of the 25th Infantry Division. Tucker, whose wife, Katherine, is with him in Hawaii, attended Cullman High School.
Guy Waldrop will preach at First Christian Church, on December 22nd, 29th and January 5th. He and Mrs. Waldrop (the former Nell Robinson) will work with the C.Y.F. and Chi Rho youth groups on those Sunday evenings.
Both are graduates of Cullman High and are now juniors at Transylvania College, in Lexington, Kentucky. She is majoring in religious education and is a member of Chi Omega social sorority. He is regular student minister, of Mount Gilead Christian Church, in Lexington and is associated with Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, of which he is chaplain.
The parents of this young couple are Mr. and Mrs. W. Crant Waldrop and Mr. and Mrs. W. Fred Robinson, all of Cullman.
Mrs. R.M. Phillips, 85, died on December 12th at her residence, 109 3rd Street, High School Addition and funeral services were held at Bethsadia on December 15th, with the Reverend Clyde Sharpton officiating and Moss-Terry directing interment.
Survivors include: five sons, U.E., Otis, R.C., Roy and Troy Phillips; six daughters, Mrs. Lennie Monou, Mrs. Mae NeSmith, Mrs. Jesse Brown, Mrs. Effie Spiegle, Mrs. Ruth Ray and Mrs. Agnes Guthrie; thirty-nine grandchildren and forty-two great-grandchildren.
Seventeen scouts, of Boy Scout Troop 219, were awarded various merit badges, at a Court of Honor, at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday evening.
Five new boys were accepted into the troop as “tenderfoots.”
Lamar Strickland was presented the “God and Country” badge. Others receiving various merit badges were: Eric Thomas, Robert Kilpatrick, Bill Smith, Bobby Laudermilk, David Adderhold, Sidney Morrow, John Frutiger, Ronnie DuBose, Paul Howard, Junior, Harry Fuller, III, David Wood, Jimmy Grier, David McKoy, Ronnie Apel, Joe Basenburg and Don Basenburg.
Tenderfoot Scouts accepted into the troop were: John McKoy, Dickie Barnes, Bill Ruehl, John Shaw and William Huggins.
Glenn Adderhold, scoutmaster, was assisted in the presentation of the awards by G.C. Basenburg, troop committee chairman, Reverend W.L. Curl, Herb McAmis and the members of the troop committee.
Parents of the troop members were special guests.
This troop is going to Trade, on an overnight camping trip, on December 20th.
