WEST POINT – The West Point Warriors hosted the Curry Yellow Jackets at West Point Stadium in 5A region 6 tonight and sent the Curry team home with an L.

The first quarter was all about the Warriors setting their pace for the game as they held the Yellow Jackets to only 3 yards in the first drive of the game and forced a punt.

The Warriors had a different outcome for their first drive as they marched down the field in an 8-play 62-yard drive to the end zone, led by Cameron Moore who finished the drive with a 36-yard rushing touchdown and followed it with a 2-point conversion catch.

Another failed drive by Curry let the Warriors take over close to midfield and once again ended with a touchdown, this time from the air as quarterback Kolton Easterwood threw a 9-yard pass to Brannon Calvert, and by the end of the first quarter the Warriors had the lead 14-0.

The second quarter began with a punt from Curry landing in the hands of the Warriors’ own Hunter Persall who, with help from his team, carried the ball 62 yards for a touchdown on the return.

The very next drive for Curry also ended up in the wrong hands as Warrior Dalton Freeman intercepted a pass. The next play for West Point concluded in a 27-yard touchdown pass to Moore and upped the lead to 27-0 in the first two minutes of the second quarter.

The next bit of action wasn’t until 55 seconds remained in the second quarter as Moore was found on a route again by Easterwood on a 22-yard touchdown pass.

Curry, visibly shaken, fumbled on the next drive, giving the ball back to the Warriors, who scored again, a mere eight seconds after their last touchdown- also by a guy named Moore.

The first half ended with the score 40-0 and Curry found themselves way behind to start the second half.

After the break, both teams went back-to-back on turnovers until West Point got the ball a second time in the third quarter. An 11-play drive led the Warriors to the end zone for the seventh time of the night.

With 47 unanswered points, the Warriors went into the fourth and final quarter with a huge lead and great expectations which wouldn’t be disrupted easily.

The Curry Yellow Jackets seemed tired as they gutted out a 13-play, six-minute and 11-second drive to start the fourth. It finally ended with a 1-yard touchdown carry after the Warriors, led by Tyler Thompson on the defensive line, stopped them on their first two attempts. West Point finally allowed Curry on the board, 47-6.

As for any other action, it wasn’t until the final play of the game as a crazy 64-yard carry by the Yellow Jackets ran the clock out and upped the losing score to the Warriors 47-12.

For the third consecutive year the Warriors clinched their spot in the 5A playoffs.

Total yardage for the Warriors was 389; the Warriors gave up 247 total yards to the Yellow Jackets.

Moore led the Warriors with 12 carries, 108 yards and three touchdowns.

Quarterback Easterwood went 5 for 8 on passing with 115 passing yards and two passing touchdowns.

With the win tonight, the Warriors go to 5-4 and 4-2 in region play.

West Point travels to Lawrence County next week for their final regular season game.
