SUMITON – The Meek Tigers ran into a buzz saw Friday night in Sumiton as they took on the Sumiton Christian Eagles. The Tigers were 5-4 heading into the game looking to end their season on a positive note while Sumiton Christian was 6-2 needing a victory to achieve a playoff berth. The Eagles were successful in this endeavor as they rolled over the undersized and undermanned Tigers 52-32 gaining entry to the Class 1A playoffs for the first time in five years.
The Eagles came out of the gate red hot going on an impressive 12-play drive, ultimately punching it in on a quarterback sneak. Meek only ran three plays in the first quarter but was able to score on their second possession on a 50-yard touchdown run by John Mark Abercrombie.
That was the last time the Tigers saw the end zone in the first half as the Eagles offense continued to score at will racking up 46 points in the first half alone. The two-headed rushing attack of Tanner Talley and Sammy Latham ran around, over and through the Tiger defense.
Eagle quarterback Caleb Headrick was a perfect 6 for 6 on the night for 183 yards. Sumiton Christian scored again on the last play of the half on a perfectly executed hook and lateral play for 60 yards making the score 46-8 going into the locker room.
The Eagles took their foot off the gas in the second half only scoring one more time for the game. Meek was able to put some good drives together scoring three touchdowns with contributions from running backs Abercrombie and Destin Morris, but the game was already well out of reach.
The game ended with some of the younger players on both teams getting important playing time; the clock hit zero with a final score of 53 to 32 in Sumiton Christian’s favor. The Tigers finished their year at 5-5 while the Eagles are heading into the playoffs at 7-2.
