CULLMAN COUNTY – With one week left in regional play for Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) football, the complete playoff picture is still unclear.
From The Cullman Tribune coverage area, the Addison Bulldogs are champions of 1A, Region 7 with the Cold Springs Eagles qualified from 2A, Region 7.
Friday night, the Cullman Bearcats made a statement, winning their fourth straight, routing Southside-Gadsden at home 56-35.
Cullman, Albertville and Pell City are 3-2, tied for second behind Oxford's 6-0 record in 6A, Region 7. The Bearcats play at Brewer next week with Albertville visiting Southside and Pell City going to Fort Payne.
A lot of things will have to happen. Cullman needs to win, Albertville needs to lose and the Bearcats move to No. 2 in the region. They would be 4-2, Albertville would drop to 3-3 and lose out on a tiebreaker to Southside.
An Albertville win hurts Cullman in positioning, even if the Bearcats win at Brewer. That would put the Aggies ahead of them by tiebreaker because of a loss to the Aggies Sept. 9.
Cullman owns the tiebreaker with Pell City if they and the Panthers finish with the same region record.
Cold Springs has to win next week at Cleveland to get runner-up in 2A, Region 7 behind Tanner. The Eagles are 4-1; the Panthers dropped to 3-2 after being upset by Tarrant 21-20. A loss for the Eagles and they go from first to third in a span of two weeks.
Addison will host a first-round playoff game. The Bulldogs are 6-0 and 9-0 with a week off next Friday.
West Point controls its destiny for third in 5A, Region 6. A win at home against Curry gives the Warriors a 4-2 record, while Mortimer Jordan and Hayden play next week to determine the regional champion.
Holly Pond is in the same situation- win and the Broncos are in. Holly Pond hosts Vinemont. The Broncos have the tiebreaker over Susan Moore, who is 2-3 in the region with them. Susan Moore heads to J.B. Pennington next Friday.
Fultondale must win at Locust Fork or a possible three-way tie could be created with the Wildcats, Pennington and Locust Fork.
Holly Pond will be fourth best in the region with a win over county rival Vinemont, who is 0-5 in the region.
Good Hope is playing for pride with Dora coming to James Shabel Stadium. The Raiders are 0-5, 0-8 overall. Dora is 3-5, 1-4 in 4A, Region 6.
Fairview has its first game at Dafford Smith Stadium in three years with Springville visiting the campus next weekend.
The Aggies and Tigers stand 1-4 in the region with Fairview 3-5 overall and Springville 1-7. A win and the Aggies will be fifth in the region, just missing out on the playoffs by a game to Corner (3-3).
Addison and Hanceville have this week off. Addison is 9-0; the Bulldogs visit Winston County Oct. 28. Hanceville takes a 2-7 record to Good Hope the same night to end the season vs. the Raiders.
The first round of the AHSAA playoffs will take place the weekend of Nov. 4, with game times and sites to be announced after region play ends next weekend.
