CULLMAN – In the fall, Saturdays are reserved for football and that was obvious at Cullman High School as fans flocked to Oliver Woodard stadium to see the Cullman Cyclones take on the Fairview Aggies. Playing were the fireplug, wee wee and pee wee squads.
CULLMAN CYCLONES, 56; FAIRVIEW AGGIES, 12 (Fireplugs)
The fireplugs were first on the docket and the Cyclones took care of business. Cullman scored early and often, with the first coming just 1:29 into the game when Lucas Crane broke containment to get to the second level and raced down the near sideline for the 55-yard score.
Fairview answered in just 18 seconds when Camden Cullen blasted up the far sideline for a 65-yard score, but the Aggies were unable to convert the 2-point attempt, leaving Cullman with the 8-6 lead. It was all Cyclones from there.
Cullman broke the plane of the end zone three more times in the quarter with a 20-yard run from Jack Phillips, a 20-yard score from Weston Keel and a 60-yard interception return from Bryce Burden.
Fairview got on the board for the second, and what turned out to be their final, time, when Cullen broke free of the defense and sped 61 yards for the score as time expired in the quarter. The 2-point conversion was no good making the score 32-12 after one full period. Cullman added two more scores before the half to take a huge 48-12 lead.
The second half was marred by miscues and turnovers, but with 1:43 left on the clock, Cullman scored for the final time on a 53-yard run by Brody Vincent to seal the deal and gain momentum heading into the playoffs by a final score of 56-12.
CULLMAN CYCLONES, 12; FAIRVIEW AGGIES, 0 (Wee Wees)
The wee wee squads were the next to take the field in what turned out to be the closest contest of the afternoon. The Cyclones fumbled on their first play from scrimmage, giving Fairview great field position on the recovery by Jesus Alevos. However, a penalty and back-to-back negative plays forced the Aggies to punt the ball back to Cullman. The Cyclones took full advantage as Michael Shelton scored on a run from 1 yard out that was set up by a terrific 67-yard scamper by Eddie Calligaris. The rest of the quarter was spent swapping possession and jockeying for field position.
The Cullman Cyclones scored once more before the half, this time through the air when Trey Johnston connected with Cooper Ogstad in the front of the end zone for the 9-yard touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed but the Cyclones took a 12-0 lead to the halftime break.
Fairview and Cullman traded punts and fumbles for the remainder of the game as the Cullman Cyclone wee wee team ended their season on a high note, defeating the Fairview Aggie wee wees by a final score of 12-0.
CULLMAN CYCLONES, 24; FAIRVIEW AGGIES, 0 (Pee Wees)
Last to take the field were the pee-wees. Cullman came in with and an undefeated record looking to remain perfect heading into next week’s playoffs.
Following a Fairview punt, the Cyclones wasted no time getting the ball rolling. After a 7-yard rush by Kaden Burgess, Tyler Owens broke an impressive 73-yard run for the score. Cullman added the 2-point conversion and took an early 8-0 lead that they held for the remainder of the first quarter.
Fairview started the second with an impressive drive of their own that lasted seven plays and took up close to five minutes of the quarter but eventually bogged down at the Cullman 17 where they turned the ball over on downs. It took Cullman just one play to capitalize when Isaac Drake found a seam and was off to the races, carrying the ball 83 yards for the touchdown. The 2-point conversion was good and Cullman led 16-0 going to the half.
Drake added his second score of the day, this one an 80-yard rush, midway through the third quarter to put the Cyclones up by a comfortable 24-0 margin. This turned out to be the final score for Cullman, but it was more than enough as the Cyclones claimed the 24-0 victory and a perfect regular season.
