CULLMAN – The Lady Bearcats split a pair of matches Thursday afternoon, defeating Hayden in straight sets and falling to Meek two sets to one.
The first match of the day featured the Cullman Lady Bearcats and the Hayden Lady Wildcats, and it was a doozy. Cullman won the hard fought match two sets to one, but it was not easy.
Hayden scored the first point of the set but Cullman’s Tiffani Schwaiger quickly tied the score, the first of 13 ties in the set, with a kill. After swapping points, Hayden went on a 4-0 run to open up an 8-4 advantage. The Lady Bearcats clawed their way back in the set with stellar play from Anna Evans and Schwaiger to pull even at 15. From here the lead changed hands nine times before Cullman pulled away and ended the set on a kill from the hand of Schwaiger to claim victory 30-28.
Not much changed in the second set with both teams hungry for the win going into area tournament play next week. The Lady Wildcats opened the second set with a 4-2 push but once again Cullman bounced back and tied the game. Midway through the set Hayden pulled out to a 19-13 lead and looked as if they were on their way to taking the second set to even the match, but Cullman had a little to say about that. On the back of three kills by Evans and a pair from Schwaiger, the Lady Cats roared back to take the second set 31-29 and the match 2-0.
Cullman was able to dominate in the first set of their match against the Lady Tigers of Meek. The Lady Cats leaned on the great play of Schwaiger, Evans and Corley Parrish to put away Meek by a score of 25-13.
Set two was a different story. Meek kept pace with Cullman the entire set and scored the last two points of the frame for a 26-24 victory. In the third and deciding set, Cullman jumped out to an early lead but Meek did not go down without a fight. The Lady Tigers stormed back to take a 4-point lead that they would hold on to for the remainder of the set, winning 15-10 and taking the match 2-1.
