BREMEN – Pop quiz, what do you get when you have three rushers combine for 400-plus yards? The answer is a Cold Springs win. Nick Rollo (199), Cayde Elliott (142) and Fisher Willoughby (82) ran roughshod over the Winston County Yellow Jackets 57-20 to give the Eagles their fifth straight win.

Riding their three-headed rushing attack, Cold Springs scored early and often. After forcing a three and out on Winston County’s first possession of the game, Cold Springs quickly found themselves in the end zone thanks to a 57-yard rush by Rollo. The Eagles added the PAT to take a 7-0 lead that they were never in danger of losing.

The Yellow Jackets picked up their first of only two first downs in the first half on their next possession but were forced to punt the ball away. The punt was a beauty and pinned Cold Springs at their own 3-yard line. Willoughby immediately got the Eagles out of the hole with a 9-yard scamper. Three plays later Rollo busted out a 52-yard run down the near sideline into Yellow Jacket territory. Elliott added a 21-yard run giving Cold Springs a first-and-goal from the 9. Two plays later Elliott finished off the 97-yard drive with a 2-yard QB sneak. The PAT failed, making the score 13-0.

Winston County ran just two plays on their next possession before giving the ball back to Cold Springs via a fumble that was recovered by Nicholas Johnson. Cold Springs turned the turnover into a field goal to take a 16-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Unable to move the ball, Winston County set up for a punt from their own 35 on their first possession of the second quarter. However, QB and punter James Moore had no intention of kicking the ball as he floated a pass to his receiver, who had gotten behind the Cold Springs defense, for their first score of the night. The 2-point try was no good and the score stood a 16-6.

After trading punts with Winston County, Cold Springs had the ball deep in their own territory at the 11 but Elliott quickly changed that. The dual threat quarterback took off up the near sideline for 54 yards on a designed run. He then hit a streaking Trevor Slayton for a 35-yard touchdown strike to put the Eagles up 23-6 with 3:40 left in the half.

Following another Yellow Jacket punt, Cold Springs positioned themselves for a field goal attempt to end the half but Winston County had something to say about that as the blocked it. Realizing the ball was not dead, Spencer Overton of Winston County scooped it up and raced 65 yards for the score to pull the Yellow Jackets to within nine, 23-14, and give them momentum heading to the halftime break.

Coming out of the locker room, Cold Springs dominated the second half, scoring on their first five out of six possessions in the second half. Elliott scored on a 32-ayrd QB keeper, Russell Rollo got in the end zone form 2 yards out, Willoughby flew down the far sideline for a 32-yard touchdown, Clay Jones added a 2-yard score that was set up by a Slayton 37-yard interception return and Kevin Brakefield capped off the scoring for Cold Springs with a 4-yard rush.

Moore scored the final touchdown for Winston County.

With the 57-20 victory, Cold Springs moves to 4-0 in 2A, Region 7 play heading into next week’s matchup with the Rattlers at Tanner High School.
