WEST POINT– If you are a fan of volleyball then you were in for a treat Monday afternoon as the West Point Lady Warriors defeated the Curry Lady Yellowjackets in five hotly contested sets.

The first set in the match was just about a close as you could get. Molly Pendley got West Point on the board first with a wicked kill but an unforced error on a bad Lady Warrior serve tied the game and gave the serve to Curry. The Lady Yellowjackets went on to score the next three points but West Point quickly ended the run, scoring back-to-back points to make the score 4-3 in favor of Curry. From here the score went back and forth with both teams trading points and the lead. With the score tied at 22 late in the set, West Point came up huge with three straight points to take the set 25-22.

West Point jumped on Curry early in the second set, scoring the first four points, capped by a Pendley kill. Curry finally scored their first point when Hannah Walker recorded a soft kill. The Lady Warriors came right back with kills form Josie Huckaby and Jessica King that forced a Lady Yellowjacket timeout. The break in the action favored Curry as they were able to close the gap and eventually pull even with West Point. The rest of the set saw four lead changes and three ties before the Lady Warriors pulled ahead for good, 25-23.

The Lady Warriors looked well on their way to a sweep of the match, but the Lady Yellowjackets were not going to go away so easily. After swapping points early, Curry went on a 3-0 run to put themselves in front 8-4. West Point spent the rest of the set playing catch up, which they did on the 20th point, but they were unable to get over the hump and lost the third set 25-23. Thanks to a 10-1 run led by Kaylee Freeman and Bentley Madison, Curry dominated the fourth set 25-13 to force a fifth and decisive set.

West Point scored the first two points in the fifth and final set when back-to-back kill attempts by Freeman went wide. However, Curry quickly caught up and took the lead with a Madison Pavlovec kill and a pair of West Point errors. The Lady Yellowjackes forged ahead by as many as four before West Point fought back to even with a kill from Makenzie Carter and a pair of aces from the serve of Huckaby. Calvert and Pendley both added kills in the see-saw set that saw the Lady Warriors finish strong, scoring the last three points to earn the 17-15 victory and take the 5A Area 12 match three sets to two.

West Point’s next contest will be an out of area affair with the Cold Springs Lady Eagles at Cold Springs. Curry will next be on the floor at Addison.
