ARLEY – The Meek Tigers throttled the R.A. Hubbard Chiefs tonight in 1A region 7 by a score of 52-15.
Meek didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard, scoring on their first drive of the game with a 41-yard run from Gabriel Jones, but missing on the extra point putting six on the board. Both teams had two more possessions the first quarter with neither scoring.
The second quarter was all about the Tigers. Although Meek only held possession for 3 minutes and 37 seconds, that was plenty of time to score two more times on, you guessed it, two drives.
The Tigers started the quarter off with a touchdown from Jones, his second of the night, and held the Hubbard Chiefs to only one drive that took up 6 minutes with no change in the score, 14-0. The Meek defense kept the drive to their own 26-yard line, not allowing the Chiefs to score.
Meek running back Thomas Heath had four rushes in the quarter and scored on a 4-yard touchdown run with 3:25 left in the half, upping their lead 20-0. The Tigers ended the half with a 4-yard touchdown run from Dillon Baker 26-0. By the end of the first Heath had 69 yards rushing on seven carries. In the same time Jones had three carries for 58 yards and two touchdowns.
The second half held a little life for the visiting Chiefs but only after Meek scored again on their first drive of the third, eating up more than six minutes. Although they weren't fast-paced, Meek felt the win coming their way quickly.
The Chiefs finally capitalized with an 84-yard kickoff return from Gaige Garth giving a little momentum to R.A. Hubbard putting a score up of 32-7. Unfortunately for the visitors, momentum didn’t matter since the Tigers had possession of the football for the final five minutes of the game.
The fourth quarter started off with a touchdown for Meek who had carried the ball all the way from their own 35-yard line, and five-and-a-half minutes later finally reached the end zone.
R.A. Hubbard answered with Garth running in another touchdown. That was the last of the night for the Chiefs, who succumbed to the Meek Tigers by a final score of 52-15.
Not many teams have had a four-game winning streak like the Tigers have, which has put them 4-3 on the season. It’s still possible for them to shift into playoff contingency, but we’ll have to keep an eye on other teams like Addison, who will be hosting Meek next week. Addison remains undefeated on the season.
