CULLMAN – The investigation into the suspicious death of a local woman is still ongoing, and two persons of interest are still on authorities' radar, according to Cullman City Police Department Capt. Becky Boyd.
"Jerome Flanigan and Kayla Thursby have not been excluded from our investigation," Boyd said on Sunday afternoon.
Boyd says Flanigan and Thursby, both of Cullman County, are still considered persons of interest in the suspicious death of Leslie Clements, 33, of Cullman, whose body was found on Friday, Sept. 16 in an apartment on Fuller Street in southwest Cullman.
Flanigan is being held at the Cullman County Detention Center on unrelated drug charges.
Timeline of events
Friday, Sept. 16: Police discovered the body of Leslie Clements, 33, of Cullman, in an apartment on Fuller Street. The death was classified as suspicious and the body was sent to Huntsville for autopsy.
On Friday evening, Boyd released the names and photos of two persons of interest in the investigation into the death of Clements- Jerome Flanigan and Kayla Thursby. She said the CPD is not calling them suspects.
Saturday, Sept. 17: Officers responded to a report of shots fired at the home of Terry Fields at 1410 Second St. SW.
George Lamar Flanigan, 38, the brother of Jerome Flanigan, was found with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was transported by ambulance to Cullman Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released. CPD identified the shooter as Ronald McLaughlin. According to a statement from the CPD, McLaughlin was cooperative with the police and the shooting appeared to be self-defense. The Cullman County District Attorney will determine if charges will be filed.
Sunday, Sept. 18: Police said they had located and spoken with Thursby.
Monday, Sept. 19: According to Boyd, "We have located and interviewed Jerome Flanigan. He is currently being held at Cullman County Detention Center on unrelated charges. We are still awaiting the autopsy. The investigation is still ongoing."
On the same day, the CPD releases the photo of a person in a red Volvo and ask for the public's help in identifying the driver.
Wednesday Sept. 21: Boyd said, "We are no longer looking for the person in the red Volvo."
Thursday, Sept. 22: An autopsy has been performed, but the the cause of death is still undetermined pending additional examinations. When asked if Jerome Flanigan is still considered a person of interested, Boyd said, "He is still part of the ongoing investigation."
Sunday, Sept. 25: Boyd says Jerome Flanigan and Thursby, both of Cullman County, are still considered persons of interest.
