BREMEN – The Cold Springs Eagles hosted the Falkville Blue Devils tonight for their homecoming game and it was not disappointing for them as they sent the Blue Devils back home with an L, taking the victory 48-22.
Cold Springs senior Nicholas Rollo had the Devils’ defensive line busy all night with rushes up the middle, and they were seemingly unaware that they were there to stop him. Rollo summed up 10 rushing plays in the first half and put up 202 yards and three touchdowns all before halftime. One of those rush plays was from a 76-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
Falkville wasn't allowed into the end zone before being down 21-0 in the second quarter where a fumble by the Eagles set up the Devils for a 77-yard run play and turned the tables a bit.
Fumbles seemed to put most of the pressure on both sides of the ball as the Eagles lost the ball four times in the first half recovering one of those in the first quarter.
Both teams combined for 11 fumbles throughout the game.
One of those lost balls came from Falkville after a long 3-minute drive ended with them turning the ball back over to Cold Springs and putting the ball on the Eagles’ own 12-yard line.
Another great Rollo run for 73 yards put the Eagles within scoring distance for Rollo again, who capitalized on the second play of the drive and upped the Cold Springs lead 27-7.
Right after halftime Cold Springs had the ball again stripped away and into the Blue Devils’ hands as Rollo, unlike in his great plays, gave it up to the defense and once again the tables turned to the opposite side of the field.
During the same drive a backwards pass resulted in a Falkville fumble and recovery in Cold Springs’ favor. There were then consecutive fumbles, ending with the Eagles back in possession and scoring position in a crazy game of back and forth. Cold Springs finally scored and put the Eagles up in points and morale 35-7 on a 1-yard run by senior Fisher Willoughby, his only touchdown on the night.
Falkville late in the third quarter showed a little bit of angst as a 53-yard passing touchdown shortened the lead for a minute 35-14, but it would soon be the Eagles with the ball again.
After six fouls and six minutes into the fourth quarter Falkville only scored once more and was bested once more by the Eagles star of the night, Rollo, with a 13-yard rush, followed up by an interception by Cold Springs’ Kevin Brakefield who returned it for a touchdown.
The Cold Springs Eagles took their homecoming game 48-22, advancing 2-0 in regional play this season.
Cold Springs racked up 439 total yards against the Blue Devils and gave up 362 yards to Falkville.
Rollo had 249 total yards with four touchdowns. Willoughby had 105 total yards with one touchdown. Senior River Banks had 46 total yards and one touchdown.
Cold Springs will host the Good Hope Raiders next week.
