CULLMAN – If you are a serious runner looking for a challenge, and you just happen to prefer running beside a peaceful lake surrounded by large pine trees, then this is the race for you. Running in Circles is happening Oct. 15-16 at Sportsman Lake Park. It’s at 24-hour challenge race, which will last, you guessed it, 24 hours, but runners can choose to run a 24-, 12-, 6-, 3- or 1-hour individual run. Rather run in a team? Teams can choose between a 24- or 12-hour run that is split up between six runners.

The run is a fundraiser for Knapsacks for Kids and Bethany Village.

Quite possibly the most challenging race to ever be held in the state, this will be the first time a run of this kind is held in Alabama. Each run will be authorized by USA Track & Field (USATF) as an Alabama State Championship.

Running in Circles is a timed run, not a distance run like general races. The way a timed race works is runners run as far as possible within the set time interval that they have chosen. The 1-hour run will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday. The other runs will begin at 9:30 a.m. There are many different prizes for first-, second- and third-place winners of each time interval.

Money raised in 2016 will be divided between two exceptional nonprofits: Bethany Village, an exciting new addition to Camp McDowell in Winston County, designed specifically to accommodate those who are physically or mentally challenged from Cullman County and others across Alabama, and Knapsacks for Kids, a project to make sure kids who need free or reduced meals at school Monday through Friday also have something to eat Saturday and Sunday.  First United Methodist Church started their program in 2012 and currently sends knapsacks home with 200 students during the school year.  County-wide there are more than 700 kids receiving weekend knapsacks of food through a variety of churches, credit unions and other organizations.
