CULLMAN – A pedestrian was hit and killed on Highway 157 West in front of Logan's Roadhouse Friday evening.
Cullman County Coroner Jeremy L. Kilpatrick confirmed that Reuben Doss, 55, from Alabaster was struck and killed by a vehicle as he crossed the highway going toward the Shell station near exit 310 at approximately 9:15 p.m. The vehicle, a 2008 Mazda 6, was traveling north.
Leading up to the incident, according to Cullman City Police Lt. Jeff Warnke,"Mr. Doss' vehicle had broken down on I-65 en route to Decatur near exit 310. He managed to limp the vehicle off the roadway and pulled over on side of 157 at about 8 p.m.. He then called his brother-in-law in Alabaster for help."
Somewhere around 9:15, says Warnke, Doss was walking or running, trying to get across 157, going toward the Shell station in a northwesterly angle.
"There were two vehicles northbound on 157," said Warnke. "A young lady in the left lane, and a young man in right lane. The young man was in (the young lady's) blind spot, at about her 5 o'clock position. The young man could not see Doss. The young lady told us that in her statement, that the young man was not able to see Mr. Doss, due to being in the blind spot and the angle at which Mr. Doss was walking across the road."
According to Warnke, Doss ran out in front of the young lady, and she braked hard and honked her horn. She told police that she saw the young male driver, identified as James Anthony Arnold, 20, of Cullman look over to see what was going on, and that is when Doss, wearing dark clothing, stepped out in front of Arnold's car. Doss was killed instantly.
"Mr. Arnold was not speeding," said Warnke. "He had just gotten off work and was en route home. He did nothing wrong."
Law enforcement was on the scene for approximately two and and half hours.
A secondary incident occurred when a Regional Paramedical Services ambulance was rear-ended near the primary scene.
