BLOUNTSVILLE – After a narrow loss to the J.B. Pennington Tigers last week, the Holly Pond Broncos traveled to Susan Moore for the Bulldogs' homecoming. The home team was 0-2 for the season and looking for a victory on their special day, while the visitors were hoping to redeem themselves and make their record 3-1. The Broncos emerged victorious, 34-28.
The Broncos kicked off to start the game and quickly recovered the Bulldogs' fumble. Susan Moore quickly turned the game in their favor by scoring after Holly Pond's punt and getting the extra point. As the quarter continued, the Bulldogs leaned heavily on their ground game while the Broncos struggled to gain yards. By the end of the first quarter, Susan Moore led the game 7-0.
The second quarter started as a tug-of-war for yards, with both teams fumbling and recovering. The Holly Pond recovery of the Bulldogs' fumble eventually culminated in the Broncos' first touchdown of the night, which was made by quarterback Michael Lambert and followed by a missed extra point. Another Bronco touchdown was made soon after by Caleb Jones, followed by a 2-point conversion. Susan Moore's Anthony Cervantes rushed for a touchdown which, with an extra point, tied the game with less than a minute left in the quarter.
After halftime, the Broncos were quick to put more points on the board with a touchdown from Dylan Morton and a good 2-point conversion. Mason May added to the Broncos' score with the second TD of the quarter, which brought their score up to 28. The Bulldogs retaliated with a touchdown of their own from Cervantes and an extra point. The third quarter ended with a score of 28-21 in Holly Pond's favor.
Susan Moore was quick to tie the game again in the fourth quarter with another TD by Cervantes and an extra point, but the Broncos soon gained yards with Lambert and a touchdown by Jones gave Holly Pond a lead that they refused to relinquish. Despite the multiple downs that the Bulldogs made, the Broncos managed to hold them off until the clock ran out and they won the game 34-28.
Tonight was the first time Holly Pond has beaten Susan Moore since 1995.
The Broncos have a bye week next week, but return on the 23rd at home against Asbury.
