CULLMAN – The Cullman County Democrats in conjunction with the North Central Alabama Young Democrats (NCAYD) will be hosting a Grand Opening event Saturday, Sept. 3 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for the Cullman Democratic Campaign Office. Headline speakers for the event include candidate for U.S. Senate Ron Crumpton, a representative from Forward Alabama and Chairwoman of the Alabama Democratic Party, Nancy Worley.
Roger Alan Duke, NCAYD vice president, said, “Both organizations share a common goal: to help revamp the Democratic Party in Cullman” and that NCAYD’s reason for aiding the Cullman County Democratic Party with this event is to, “organize people in the key demographic of 16 to 40 into the party to gradually change this community.” He also noted that the event on Saturday isn’t just about the campaign, but “it’s about our groups coming together to both revamp and expand the party through outreach into forgotten communities to get more people involved.”
NCAYD is currently in discussions with Forward Alabama in their efforts to help train citizens of Cullman County in a wide range of political activism activities, from registering voters to campaigning; specifically, for various progressive candidates such as Crumpton.
Ernestine Linton, co-chair of the Cullman Democratic Party, put the objective of Saturday quite bluntly, stating, “We just want all Democrats to get involved. This is a very important election and people do not realize just how important of an election that it’ll be.” Which is quite the noble goal; getting people to vote, no matter their political affiliation, is a noble deed; however, this is Alabama. Where our voters are as red as the great Crimson Tide. When asked about why they want to contest such a state, Linton responded, “It won’t be overnight.” More realistically, the group is hoping to make a pale, blue dot in a sea of red. “If we could just get people involved, if we can get these Democrats to admit that they’re Democrats, things will change. This state didn’t change to Republican overnight and it won’t turn back to the Democrats overnight. It’s going to take a lot of work together.”
Duke chimed in with, “Everyone is going to have to work together. Counties are going to have to work with other counties.”
