CULLMAN – The Cullman County Human Trafficking Task Force, District Attorney Wilson Blaylock and Judge Kim Chaney will present special guest Tajuan McCarty, founder of The WellHouse in Birmingham, on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at Desperation Church. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

McCarty, a survivor of human sex trafficking, will share her story. At 15, she was sexually exploited by her “boyfriend-turned-pimp.” McCarty says she was trafficked to Birmingham so many times, it became her home. As a result of her experiences, she is a passionate advocate for victims of sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

In Jan, 2011 McCarty opened The WellHouse is a nonprofit, faith-based and Christ-centered agency dedicated to rescuing women from sexual exploitation/human trafficking. “It provides a safe residential environment to sexually exploited women, offering spiritual, mental, emotional and physical support services. The WellHouse is the only 24-hour shelter offering immediate housing assistance to women being prostituted in the Southeast.”

McCarty was recognized as one of The Top 20 Women Who Make a Difference in Birmingham and accepted The FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award on behalf of The WellHouse, due to her efforts to fight human trafficking.

McCarty will speak on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. at Desperation Church, 202 Elizabeth St. NE in Cullman.
