GUNTERSVILLE – The 2016 high school football season has been good to the Holly Pond Broncos. For the first time since 2004, the broncos have started the season 2-0. The green and white dismantled Coosa Christian 49-0 to open the season and they followed that up with a 33-20 win over the Brindlee Mountain Lions Friday night.
It was the Lions who got on the board first when junior Jordan Leak found pay dirt from four yards out with 7:51 left in the first to give Brindlee Mountain the lead.
Holly Pond came storming back, consistently moving the ball down the field and capping the drive with a 6-yard plunge from Caleb Jones to knot the score at 6-6.
Holly Pond would get their second score on the night when Michael Lambert connected with Juan Garcia for a 4-yard touchdown strike to give the Broncos a lead they would never relinquish.
Jones would find the end zone for the second time as he took the ball in from 31 yards out late in the third quarter, adding to his stats and the Holly Pond lead as the Broncos took an 18-6 advantage to the third quarter.
Brindlee Mountain would close the gap in the third with a 4-yard TD run by Brent Meyers, but Holly Pond would come right back with a score of their own, a 5-yard rush from Lambert for the score.
Meyers would score again, this time from six yards away, but it was not enough as Jones picked up a touchdown hat trick, scoring his third TD on a 7-yard scamper to seal the game and ensure a Holly Pond victory, 33-20 over Brindlee Mountain. The Broncos look to make it three in a row next Friday night as they host JB Pennington.
