CULLMAN – An early morning traffic incident on Interstate 65 South near exit 308 has left one person dead and three others injured, one critically, confirmed Cullman County Coroner Jeremy L. Kilpatrick.

Quitman Clarke, 18, of Mobile was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The call came in around 4:40 a.m. this morning," said Cullman City Police Officer Jeff Mize. "A woman at the Chevron station by exit 308 said that she heard a collision."

The location of the collision was not immediately known, but Mize says that when it was located, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), or state troopers, were brought in since it occurred on the interstate.

According to Mize, the incident happened just south of the Highway 278 overpass, when the vehicle, a white Honda Accord, left the roadway and struck a stand of pine trees.

One of the occupants was out of the vehicle and walking around the scene, able to talk to first responders.

ALEA is handling the continued investigation.
