HOLLY POND – On Monday night Holly Pond’s Town Council held a special meeting to cover a topic that wasn’t able to be discussed at their last meeting, due to the meeting being cut short.
The topic was settling on an agreement with local antique dealer Wayne White and the price of rent for his new shop.
The counterproposal that was agreed upon by the council was a two-year lease on the old post office building which currently sits unused and in disrepair. White will have to make improvements and renovations in order to get the building in shape for use. Because of the cost of these renovations, which White will pay out of pocket, the council has agreed to let White go the first year rent-free. After the first year, a $400-per-month rent will be charged. The lease will be up for renegotiation after two years.
White has yet to come to a decision on the counterproposal.
Holly Pond Mayor Herman Nail believes the shop will be important and beneficial to the community.
“Well, having that shop in the town limits is helpful for us,” Nail said. “It will have people come and come to our town, and come and shop without having to drive all the way out to somewhere else. That will be a tremendous help for our people. It will provide money. And also, we have stores in the town. We have Carpenters Cabinet in the town right now, and then the storm shelters are all rolled together. They’re all coming along together as a part of one thing.”
A consistent point raised by the council members was the fact that without White’s interest there would be no other use for the old post office.
“It comes down to, do you want him in the building or do you want no one in it?” Councilman Ricky Carr said.
This topic of rent was the only topic covered, and once the motion of agreed rent price was passed, the meeting was adjourned.
