FAIRVIEW – The Fairview Town Council held a regular meeting on Monday evening, where they heard from guest Ron Stone about an upcoming tax debate.
Stone, who is with the Cullman County Personnel Board, has been making the rounds through Cullman’s different county municipalities speaking about a proposed change to the tax structure in the county.
Stone spoke with the Fairview council Monday night and asked them to place an ad in the local newspapers advertising the upcoming tax debate, which is scheduled for Aug. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Fairview High School auditorium.
In old business, an update was given on the Fairview Senior Center. Fairview Mayor Dale Seals said there had to be a compaction test done on the concrete slab that will be used for the center. The test failed, meaning that the concrete will have to be taken up and the dirt dug out about 2 feet in depth which will cost around $20,000 if the contractor that is building the center does it.
Brian Stricklin, owner of the Brandin’ Iron Steakhouses, has volunteered to do the work. All he asks is that he gets paid for his gas.
In new business, it was reported that the lights at the park pavilions, along with the fans, need to be replaced. It should cost around $1,000 to do this, adding timers to the lights so that they will not stay on all night. The council approved this expense.
Don Ray and Linda Sullivan were appointed election officials, along with Fairview Town Clerk Debbie Shedd, for the Aug. 23 municipal election. The board approved using hand ballots rather than renting a voting machine for the day. The election officials will get paid $70 for the 12-hour day. The Fairview Town Hall will be the voting headquarters. All of this was approved by the council. Seals left the room for the discussion.
There was a request from Cullman County Conservation District for a donation. The council will donate to the Fairview School, which is what they have done in the past.
There was a discussion of an estimate for work at the park from Parris Fence Company. The council is waiting to hear from BJ Fencing so they can compare estimates before they decide to do anything.
The Fairview Town Council meets on the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
