CULLMAN – With her devoted parents by her side day after day at UAB’s Spain Rehabilitation Center, Anna Hughes, the Vinemont High School senior who was in a devastating car wreck on June 25, is learning to regain some mobility in her left arm. Four of her vertebrae were affected by the wreck and her family and friends hope and pray that, against all odds and the doctors’ predictions, Anna will be able to walk again.
Randy Hughes, Anna’s father, gave this update, “We are seeing improvements with Anna. She can now touch her face with her left hand, which is a big deal. She can talk now with a cap on her trach. She's sore from the physical therapy. It's day-by-day, but we're headed in the right direction.”
This Saturday, the community will be coming together at Smith Farms to give their support to Anna and her family during an all-day fundraiser where a benefit bike ride, live music, games, bounce houses for the children, food and drinks and a raffle will be available. Admission is free and there are numerous items to be raffled including:

- Ed White Jewelers necklace and earring set valued at $451
- Doug Doggett Jewelers $50 gift certificate
- Black and Decker drill donated by Lowe’s Home Improvement
Anna’s injuries will require specialized care once she comes home and her parents are being taught priceless skills that they will be required to use every day once their precious daughter is released from the hospital.
Anna’s dad shared the importance of the fundraiser for his daughter and family, “The fundraisers are allowing us to be with Anna. She's 17, scared, unable to care for herself and needs our support in every way. While Anna is going through therapy they're also teaching us how to take care of her when she comes home. So it's very important for us to be here. They only allow one of us to spend the night so we have to get lodging and of course food, parking, etc. Our jobs are secure, but we're not getting paid while we're off. The fundraising is allowing us to put our total energy in Anna's recovery. On behalf of Denise and myself we are overwhelmed and humbled by everyone's kindness and generosity. The fundraiser will be held from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Smith Farms, located at 1825 Fourth St. SW on Highway 278 just east of the I-65 exchange. Attend all day or swing by for lunch to support the Hughes family.
