BAILEYTON – The Baileyton Town Council came together for a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday evening, where four incumbents and a challenger received Certificates of Election. The mayoral race will be the only one on the ticket in Baileyton in the upcoming Aug. 23 municipal election. Mayor Johnny Dyar will square off against Billy McElroy.

The council will be as follows:

  • Place 1, Walker Mead
  • Place 2, Windell Calloway
  • Place 3, Wendell Peterson (Incumbent Roy Shedd dropped out of the race at Monday night’s meeting.)
  • Place 4, Myra Martin
  • Place 5, Greg Griffin

The first item on deck at Monday’s meeting was the rental of the horse arena for Aug. 12-13 for two different horse shows. David Latham is the renter and will pay $1,200. He requested that the council consider being a class sponsor for $200, where they will be called out and recognized at both shows for the cost of one ad. The council approved this expense.

In new business, the council discussed Ron Stone, who is with the Cullman County Personnel Board, and has been making the rounds through Cullman’s different county municipalities speaking about a proposed change to the tax structure in the county.

He was not in attendance at the council meeting on Monday night; however, he stopped by before the meeting and had a lengthy discussion with Town Clerk Patricia Gilbert. Stone asked the town to place an ad in the local newspapers advertising the upcoming tax debate, which is scheduled for Aug. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Fairview High School auditorium.

The purchase of a 100-gallon tank and pump was approved.

Resolutions were passed regarding the upcoming Aug. 23 municipal election:

2016-003, Hand Count Absentee Ballots

2016-004, Appoint Town Clerk as Absentee Election Manager

2016-006, Appoint poll workers. The prospective poll workers were Harold Hyde, Martha Guthrie, Ruth Rose, Betty Hyde and Bobby Martin. All were approved by the Council.

Councilman Calloway spoke of the excessive speeding on School House Road, saying there needs to be speed limit signs posted. He claims they can’t get any police down there to do anything about it. This is a hot topic in Baileyton and has been the discussion in several town council meetings as of late.

Dyar was not at the night’s meeting, so there were no mayor’s notes.

The Baileyton Town Council meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
