VINEMONT – Area children enjoyed a back-to-school bash at the Vinemont Scout House on Friday evening. There were plenty of free school supplies, free cotton candy, drinks and thrilling activities for the kids. The event was sponsored by both The Church @ the Atrium and Church 212.

“This is two churches coming together to hand out free school supplies and let the kids have some fun before they have to start back to school,” said Jamie Johnson. “I am with The Church @ the Atrium and Chris Harrison is here with his church, Church 212. We both got together and decided to do something for the community so we are handing out school supplies while they last. We’ve got cotton candy and candy bags and all sorts of games for the children of Vinemont and Cullman County.”

The parishioners at both churches have been pretty busy getting ready for the event. They have been collecting and donating school supplies for quite some time. During Wednesday night’s Bible Study, volunteers gathered together and filled all the bags. Everyone helped out, which made the bash a special time.

“I teach at Vinemont and so do several others here today, so these are our kids,” Johnson smiled. “We wanted to do something to help them out. For a lot of parents, school supplies are kind of expensive, so we thought it would be a nice idea to try to help them out a little bit. We put together almost a hundred bags of school supplies. Most of the bags have paper, crayons, color pencils, markers and regular pencils; just kind of the basic supplies for any grade. We wanted to at least help them get a start, and they can add to it a little bit. This is the first time we have done this and we are really excited about it.”

The bash was a hit with the children who went from game to game with huge smiles on their faces. It was a lot of fun for the adults who were there, too.

“I just got off work and brought the kids by here,” said Sue Harvell. “They each got their bags of school supplies and have played all the games. I have three more kids at football practice. They will get finished around 7 p.m., so I will probably run them over here then. This is really nice.”

“My favorite part is the bouncy house,” said 8-year-old Marlie excitedly.

“I love the bouncy house and the drinks,” giggled 7-year-old Gracie. “I drank a bottle of water first, but it wasn’t very cold. Now I’m drinking a Coke,” she grinned sheepishly.

It wasn’t long before it was time for Marlie and Gracie to go home, but by the looks of it, they had a blast!
