CULLMAN – The 11th Annual Alabama Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday will begin Friday, Aug. 5 at 12:01 a.m., and will end at midnight on Sunday, Aug. 7.
Cullman County and city will be participating in the event again this year, each waiving local sales tax as well.
The event gives shoppers an opportunity to pack back-to-school, along with fall and winter clothes, shopping into a single weekend, a weekend in which the usual state sales tax is lifted, providing an opportunity for families to stock up on supplies and clothing for the new school year at lower prices.
Visit favorite stores in Cullman ahead of the weekend to find out if the stores are running special weekend promotions, such as Office Depot’s brown-bag promotion.
According to Alabama Retail’s website, the annual event is about “giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, books and clothing free of the state’s four percent sales or use tax.”
Also, according to that same website, many counties also waive their local tax, which provides shoppers a 10 percent discount, not counting any promotions or sales going on at each individual store.
See the PDF below, prepared by AlabamaRetail.com, for some by-the-numbers facts about the annual shopping holiday.
