GOOD HOPE – The Good Hope City Council held a regular council meeting on Monday night, with two special guests in attendance, Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry and Good Hope High School Principal John Hood.

Gentry addressed the council in hopes of getting the City’s contract with the Sheriff’s Department renewed. It will be renewed.

Hood thanked the council for its support of the school’s athletic programs and spoke of the work being done to refurbish the school’s gymnasium.

“The Good Hope athletic family and I wish to sincerely express our appreciation for your support of our athletic programs. It is because of generous contributors like yourself and your organization that allow our programs to thrive. We are working hard to restore the Good Hope basketball program back to its excellence (from) a few years ago,” said Hood. “To accomplish this, the parents, coaches and I are painting the gym and giving every inch a thorough cleaning. We are also having the gym floor sanded down, restored and repainted. This all is a large undertaking with a large cost. We are hoping to subsidize the cost with donations and by selling gym ads. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your contribution and for helping us bring excitement back to the Good Hope gym.”

The council voted to make a one-time donation of $3,000 towards the gym floor.

Councilman John Harris, Place 1, reported, “On the bank balances, we took $300,000 out of the general fund and put it into the cash reserve. The reason we did that was because it draws more interest that way. If we need it back in the general fund, we can withdraw the money out and put it back into the general fund,” said Harris.

In Place 3, Councilwoman Susan Eller said that during the week of July 17, two pumps were pulled in order to move restrictions at the Waste Water Treatment Plant, which is typical maintenance that occurs every three to five months. One of the couplings and one of the bearings on the transvariation rotor has failed so that will require replacement. Again, this is something that is routine.

Councilman Taft Dillashaw, Place 4 stated that Good Hope will sponsor a Back to School Bash on Friday, July 29 from 5-7 p.m. at the Good Hope Municipal Park. There will be hotdogs, slides and T-shirts. If anyone wants to come out and help cook, please do so.

Place 5 Councilman Matthew Glover reported that the ball tournament last weekend “wasn’t as good as they usually are.” The City broke even on it.

A written statement from Mayor Jerry Bartlett to the council notifying them of the people who filed statements of candidacy for the upcoming election was read aloud by Bartlett.

This is to certify that only one person filed a statement of candidacy for the following offices by 5 p.m. on the third Tuesday in July preceding the 23rd day of August, 2016, the date set for an election of municipal officers in the City of Good Hope, Alabama, and unopposed, and the name of such persons are as listed below:

                     Mayor – Jerry Bartlett

Council Member Place 1 – John E. Harris

Council Member Place 3 – Susan Eller

Council Member Place 5 – Taft Dillashaw

Positions opposed, to be voted upon at the municipal election held on the 23rd day of August, 2016 are as follows:

Place 2 – Maxie Jones and Patrick Dunagan

Place 4 – Matthew Glover and Greg Brown

Certificates of Election were given to Bartlett, Harris, Eller and Dillashaw.

Two alternates for the Board of Adjustments were approved. They are Terry Shabel and Roger Gentry.

Field Earp was appointed to the Alcohol Review Committee.

The Good Hope City Council meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 6:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
