HANCEVILLE – A regular Hanceville City Council meeting was held on Thursday night, where a special presentation was made. City Clerk Tania Wilcox was awarded City Clerk of the Year for District 11, which consists of four north Alabama counties.
“Hanceville, be proud of your City Clerk Tania Wilcox,” said Mayor Kenneth Nail. “This is a big award for a very deserving city clerk who loves Hanceville. She is honest and loyal to the citizens. She is a great Christian lady and is dedicated to the citizens of Hanceville. We are proud of you!”
Retired Hanceville football coach, Danny Miller, addressed the council and thanked them for the all their help and support during his time at Hanceville.
“I wanted to speak to the council in public to let you know how much I appreciate all you have done to help us in the past eight years,” Miller said. “I enjoyed my time here, I enjoyed working with you and you will never know how much I appreciate all of the things that the council, the mayor and the City has helped us do in the last eight years.”
Visitor John Williams, of the Life That Counts – Peer Mentoring Program made a presentation to the council showing all the good things the program has done at Hanceville High School the past two years. He asked the council to work a yearly donation towards the program into next year’s budget.
In other business, the council granted Danny Sterling permission to use the Ray Talley Athletic Facility as storage for items for the nonprofit organization Hope Changes Everything. The Council also agreed to lease property at $150 per month to Mr. Tidwell of Double Springs. He will use the property to park log trucks.
Two big financial approvals were given: the council approved the paving of Forrest Drive for $14,810; the council approved an insurance renewal for the City, with a premium of $42,151.80 to be paid.
Reports from staff included Police Chief Bob Long, who said the annual Kid’s Night Out continues to grow. This year they are about $1,250 short. Also, according to Long, coming in August, there will be a Church Security Class offered by the Hanceville Police Department.
Fire Chief Roger Green reported that last month there were a total of 89 calls, which included 76 medical calls, three motor vehicle accidents, three structure fires and three grass fires.
The Cullman County Community Development Commission awarded the city a $12,000 grant this month. The money will be used to repair the city’s recreation center.
Councilwoman Kim Brown requested the Tree Committee meet soon.
Nail reminded everyone that the last day to qualify for the election is July 19.
The next Hanceville City Council meeting will be Thursday, July 28 at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
