CULLMAN – Two Florida residents were arrested yesterday in Cullman after police responded to a call about suspicious activity.
Cullman City Police Officer Zachary Latham received a call on Sunday about a vehicle parked at an apartment complex on Denson Avenue Southwest with two people asleep inside. Latham arrived on scene and made contact with a Phillip Elljah McDaris and Nicole Kaye Quenrud.
Latham, along with Officers Intae Suh and David Brooks, smelled an odor of what they believed to be marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. This gave officers probable cause to search the vehicle.
During the search, Latham recovered alprazolam pills (trade name Xanax), oxycodone pills, methamphetamine, liquid codeine and just under 4 pounds of marijuana. Officers also recovered over $7,500 in cash.
McDaris, 20, of Homosassa, Florida and Quenrud, 19, of Crystal River, Florida were both arrested for trafficking in cannabis, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Both were transported to the Cullman County Detention Center, where they are each being held on a $1 million bond.
Cullman City Police Captain Becky Boyd said, "I want to commend all officers involved in a job well done in making this arrest. I also wish to thank the person who saw something that they felt was suspicious and notified police. We could not effectively do our job without the assistance of the public.
